Engine noise

On a drive last week my engine started making a noise. The noise is similar to a leaking exhaust manifold gasket but everything in that area seems tight and not leaking. It also seems down on power although I am hesitant to drive it because I don't want to make matters worse. Someone suggested it might be a leaking head gasket but someone else said VW engines do not have head gaskets. I had the engine rebuilt when I built the car and it has run flawlessly for 6800 miles. Any suggestions on what is going on here?
