Has anyone had any experience with SCATVW engines and transaxles in their Replica?

I ask because my brother (who admittedly knows a ton more about bug stuff than I) recommended them for engines. I don't doubt they are good engines, but how is customer service, troubleshooting, warranty  etc, etc.

It's still a long way off before I can get a coupe but I like to have the knowledge on hand just in case. Knowledge is power and all that jazz.

The rewards of the journey far outweigh the risk of leaving the harbor

Over the years, SOC site users have been pleased with engines from CB Performance, Jake Raby, Roland Rascon, Aircooled.net, Chirco, and MOFOCO.  I have no connection with any of the above, except that CB Performance built a 2110 for me in the late 90's, and it was a quality build.  Beware of Bernie Bergman.

Good stuff, Danny! I believe Scat is a good builder as are CB Performance, Anibal Chico out in California, Art Thraen, Aircooled.net, Jake Raby as well Roland Rascon. Like Danny says, Jake Raby used to build Type I's but by his own admission he stopped because he says the parts quality just isn't there anymore. I believe you can still get good quality parts but you need to fish for them first and then be prepared to pay more; you get what you pay for.

Let me add one more quality builder to the mix. Having read and respected Larry Jowdy's advice on the old site I contacted him about building a motor. He no longer has the parts to build so he recommended Jeff Gervasis at Gem VW. I had Jeff build a 2110 that I have just had installed and it runs great. A little lower price wise with the same quality parts as the top of the line guys. His build time runs a little longer as I believe he runs a full service shop. From what I belive Larry told me Jeff builds a lot of motors for JPS Motorsports.

Lest anyone not be aware, DRD builds a seriously good engine, and as an owner of a 2276 from them (see their list at http://www.drdracingheads.com/...Turnkey-Engines.html ), I can certainly vouch for the quality of the build, the HP produced (backed up by the engine dyno report they provide) and all the parts are new.  Their engines can be shipped to you, and they crate them up in a manner designed to preclude shipping damage.

I too have heard that Darren builds a nice motor, and that his headwork is top notch. Before anyone spends serious money with DRD though, a little read may be in order- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=219319&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=drd&start=0

You are certainly free to speak for yourself Ron, but as someone who bought a killer 2276 from DRD, I feel able to speak from experience that what DRD advertises they deliver.  So I don't know from what experience you are speaking from, but unless you have personally bought an engine from DRD, perhaps your information is not quite as current as mine would be.

If I were buying a new engine I'd look elsewhere.

I did read the SAMBA link, and one or more of the responders to that guy's negative interaction with DRD, were people who told him that he seemed to be the only guy who had problems with Darren.  I had read that SAMBA post even before I bought my engine from Darren, so I went into the arrangement with DRD with all of that knowledge (good and not good).

In the end, Darren did exactly what I contracted for, the engine was delivered exactly as advertised, and the engine functions extremely well.

My concern here is that any engine builder (merchant, etc) is never going to have 100% of their customers be totally happy, but I don't think Darren and DRD should be considered as a company to not buy from based upon one guy who had a bad experience!
