envemo help

Hello,
I just purchase a 1986 Envemo cabrio that is titled and registered as a 1986 Envemo. Unfortunately, in New York, any vehicle that is 1986 and newer must be dyno tested for emissions testing. My little Envemo with its aircooled vw engine doesn't have a chance passing, plus I am not to thrilled with someone revving it up on a dyno. That being said, I need some help proving the historic value and significance of the Envemo cars. New York offers an exemption from emissions and Historic status if I can prove that the Envemo
is a classic. If anyone has original sales literature and possibly some published articles on the Envemo cars it would help me prepare my petition to DMV. I would also like to find a complete history of the company. If you could scan or copy this type of info and send it to me that would be great. With this info and pictures of my vehicle I can petition DMV for approval (and hopefully get it). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may be able to get information from Kevin Hines at Special Edition, he has some history with Envemo, and probably knows as much about them as anyone. Otherwise I would maybe contact some of the speedsterowners that live in your area about the registration and emissions issues.

There is a person on this site that has an Envemo (unless you got this one from him), lives in NJ I beleive, His name is Herb K (I can't spell it, it sounds like Kruttsnicht), he has a black 2003 Intermeccanica Roadster.

I will look to see if I can find the proper name in the Registry.

Unbelievable that each state can be so different! Maybe the fact that it was hand build and very limited production (super rare) might help? 320(-350?) built and only 100 of them cabriolets. Here's links www.team.net/www/ktud/saspeci/envemo.html

Another last alternative is the last years of the VW bug were fuel injected and had catalytic converters --- probably not very cool running or powerful though. Calif model would be even better (or worse!)

Yes, I bought Herbs car...it is in terrific condition. I did get it inspected and some how it passed emissions (if you know what I mean $$) but I don't want to go through the hassell every year. I think I have a good shot at a waiver/exemption for historic status...I just have to put together a bunch of info on Envemos. I'll keep you posted.
