I have a 2002 VS with a new 1641 with dual solex carbs and a pacesetter exhaust system. On the rear cylinder header's(closest to me when I am looking on the engine compartment) there are holes with flanges for bolts. From what I know this is the exhaust gas recirculation. In my '72 super beetle with a single carb, one of these holes has a tube leading into the header below the carb, and one leads into the air cleaner above the carb... from what I can tell. I have read a couple of books on vw's and motors and still can't quite comprehend this aspect.

1- is this in fact what I think this is.
2- is this essential for the engine to work properly, will I cause damage without it
3-would it be a really bad idea just to cap these holes off.

any suggestions for a rookie would be helpful.
Thanks, Wil
