I suspect that the 'float' has become detached from the arm of the fuel lever sender because the gas needle flops over to "E" when the key is clicked on.  No fluctuating erratic needle reading prior to this.  As BobG would say, "this is no big deal" , simply replace the unit...But how do I deal with the errant cylindrical float itself?  Has anyone experienced this?

I'm thinking I could fill the tank with cheap 87 octane (it's about half full now with the old expensive juice) so the float, being at the top of the fuel, could be (might be?)  snagged with kitchen tongs ....or, since I should drain all that old fuel that's been sitting so long, I could fish around with something pointed and sharp and hope to spear it out.

Opening a full fuel tank is not wise - too much to ignite with a spark.  Unless you say "watch this, hold my beer" first.  I'd drain tank and leave cap off to let fumes escape (don't alert EPA though).  Once dry inside put duct tape side sticky side out on a yard stick and capture white plastic cylinder --- crack a beer. Your 912E has the same sender used on late model Karmann Ghia's and others - procure one of those.  They are more $$$ than the swing arm senders but aren't as erratic and failure prone.

Greg....Actually uncapping a full gas tank is less prone to a catastrophic accident because it's the 'fumes' that are  initially ignited...far less volume of that combustive oxidation escaping from a near full gas tank.

Now is your advice to go fishing for the float with a duct taped yardstick something you've done...or know second hand that it's been successfully accomplished?
