I've just finished updating all four parts of this article, which details how to;

1.  Drill and tap your Type 1 engine case for full flow oiling, as well as;

2.  Locating and installing an external oil filter and cooler at the rear of your car, along with;

3.  Installing a pressure-limiting cover on your oil pump.

All sections are illustrated with full color photos to better describe the process.  Those photos had been missing from the original articles after a major policy change from Photobucket, a once-useful photo-sharing site, made them publicly unavailable.

I apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

Remember, that this is premium content on this site and you'll need to be a "Donating Member" in order to access it (but the Resources/Knowledge Base section is worth the price of a donation, all by itself).

Hope this helps someone!

This is what I found in my service manual (What....You think I can remember all this stuff?)

"The external cooler is a 16-pass, fan assisted, DeRale 15800 cooler mounted in the Driver’s side rear wheel well and plumbed into the oil delivery system with ½” ID hoses with AN-8 fittings.   The cooler fan is driven by an electrical thermostat set at 180° which drives a relay mounted on the driver’s inner fender wall, just forward of the ignition coil, to operate the fan.  The relay then turns the fan on and off as needed.  There is no over-ride switch.  There is a spare, new cooler in the parts stash."

I checked in my parts stash in the attic and here is the box info:

As in my article, I mounted it with the aluminum brackets that come with it, and thoe set if off of whatever surface it is attached to by about 3/4".  That has been adequate air flow to keep my 2,110cc between 200 - 205 on highways and stop and go.

Thanks Gordon...you know the ol' saying "trust but verify!"....Appreciate it!

Michael....is there a specific reason you removed your internal cooler?  Just wondering...

My air conditioner condenser is mounted between the back bullhead and the firewall. The internal oil cooler dumps through a duct downward and towards the front of the car - right into that space.

Also, the internal oil cooler is right in the path to cooling the 3/4 cylinders. I figured that moving all that heat outside of the engine compartment area would be nice if it could keep up with the 1776 and our ambient temp.

Worked for my requirements.
