I believe they hold ten, I've filled up at over 9 gallons before, I think one time I put in 9.4 gallons. If you want a bigger tank all you have to do is adjust/bend the fuel meter sender in the tank. I know this sounds a little crazy but the tank is not in the same orientation as the beetle, our tanks are on an angle and therefore the sensor shows less fuel than there actually is. Try this some time, run the tank down to E...then pop off the sender on top of the tank and look inside with a flashlight, you'll see alot of gas in there still. Just bend the rod on the sender to get it to read what's left in the tank, this may take some experimenting. I used to fill up with only six gallons when the sender was telling me empty. This will make your gas stops alot fewer.
