The borrowed somewhat tired 3.0 in the spyder took its last drive today. After the James Dean run, I had parked it in my brother in law's shop for safe keeping as I knew I would be very busy at work in the next few months. Fired it up today and took the last drive with this motor (3 months parked - started right up gotta love that).

Nice little run thru around the valley and into the garage at home. We'll pull the motor - actually steve VOLUNTEERED as he is off work this week. Then ship the longblock off to Colorado for rebuild.

It will come back 3.1 liters, dual plug, lots of well-mannered streetable HP and 270-275 lbs of torque. Torque is gooooodddd....

Oh FUNNY Jim!! I have this theory - call me nuts but I really think it might work - If I start with a solid driving engine, ship it to a reputable builder (an absolute craftsman by the way), suck it up and give him a whole bunch of money - i'll have a good Porsche engine.

That's three things DIFFERENT that I did the last time... Ahh lessons learned. angela
Angela,
A buddy of mine, an old timey original 356 guy, always talked about Vic Skirmants as being a superb engine builder. He is also currently the Vice President of the 356 Registry. Have you heard of him before? He may not still be doing rebuilds, or perhaps only on a limited basis, but he is supposedly one of the premier Porsche engine builders in the upper Mid-West (MI).

Angela,

Sorry about that. I just have to be a wise a$$ from time to time...most of the time according to those who know me well....

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=228331

came across that today, looks sort of interesting, but a pig in the poke as they used to say back on the farm....and you already did that and didn't come up with a good pig as I recall.

take care,

Jim
That's okay Jim, most of my best friends are wise a$$es. Come to think of it, pretty much ALL of my friends are shall we say, light on their verbal toes. And no offense taken, I thought it quite funny! Interesting engine you've shown there. Sticking with what I have at this point. But 3.3 325 hp, very very intriguing. Interesting that he used PMO manifolds but Weber carbs. Almost wonder if there were PMOs on it at one time. Of course, the old zenith/weber intakes are not the best in the world, so a good upgrade is PMO even if that's all you do.

Hoss, the fellow you suggest sounds terrific but I've already picked a builder. Wonderful fellow. Kevin Farrel, Injection Labs, Boulder, CO. Actually feel lucky to give him money, how weird is that? Same fellow who did the autopsy on the ill-fated 2.5.

Any chance you'll make the Paso Robles event? angela
Angela: You mentioned on the Spyderclub site that you planned a "leisurely trip so as to enjoy the sights." It's difficult for me to believe this, what with a new King Kong torquer in the rear end of your car. I don't think this is going to end up being any "leisurely" walk down PCH. I can just see you as you finish up lunch at one of the touristy restaurants in Santa Cruz, with a satisfied mini-smirk, just as I pull into the parking lot---sunburned, windblown and nursing a right arm sore from shifting to pass countless other cars while trying to catch up.

Maybe I shouldn't worry. I betcha you will be slowed down after lunch with a long line of people wanting to see that black beauty.
Trust me - it will be a most pleasant drive. PCH is too beautiful to hurry. I-5 is for bustin' a move. For the overwhelming majority of my driving, I am at or slightly below the speed limits. I have been known to get up to highway speed rather briskly.

Go with me. You'll enjoy the drive. Just don't let any squirrels come near me on the pull overs at the view points.... angela
That's why we are going to all stay together Danny - rodent protection! Should have the engine back in the next couple of weeks. The fellow did quite a bit of porting to the heads. They are going from 28mm (or was it 32?) to 38mm and will be matched to the intake manifolds (the heads are quite restrictive in stock form). Ran the numbers on the torque values and wound up buying a new clutch yesterday. The stock 911 215mm clutch is only good for about 180 lbs of torque. Ahh well, its just money...
