Rear seat, that's a joke.

Ok, when I finally get my act together will be converting my old IM into a Carrera GT wanna-be clone. (Johan was very helpful with input.) Being an older car I am not going to worry about the next guy that owns it and will personalize per my whim and taste, keeping within the Carrera GT precedent.

As the GT was a production racer what did the owners / racers do with the rear seat area? Was it stripped out? And replaced with what? I am thinking about removing the stock Speedster seating padded area and doing something different, more retro racer. Any ideas / suggestions? Simply carpet the area and put clips in to bungie items to the surface when needed? I don't see me retaining the rear seat for the unlikely event I would need to give a third person a ride... here's 20 bucks, take a cab. Maybe this is a bad idea.

Eric,

Standard Speedsters came from the factory with a rear seat/cushion. Very few had a folding back as an option. The Carrera GT Speedsters were exactly the same as the other Speedsters but there weren't any with the folding back option. The roll bar, which was fitted to most GT Speedsters, was attached to the rear seat mount. I assume racers threw the bottom part of the seat out. GT Speedsters had lightweight vinyl carpeting from the front to the area under the front seats. Some pictures of early GT cars show that same black vinyl carpeting in the back also. It gives the car more of a racy look and might be an option for your car. The small area behind the cushion was flat in the early GT cars and is called the parcel shelf. This was removed from 1958 on the GT's, leaving a rounded hump in the rear.

I'm looking forward to the result,

Johan
