I’m trying to do the calculations for a car lift in my garage to stack a speedster on top of my 997 but have very limited garage height. Can someone please tell me the general height of a speedster replica without the top up? I assume it’s close to the original but want to be sure. I have very limited space- only 113 inches total so every inch counts.  Thanks.

Thank you Bob- I appreciate you doing all the effort to give me  good measurement! I;s like to get Greg to build me a speedster at Vintage Motorcars so I suspect his cars will be similar in height.

thanks Danny- yes, my 911 is about 52" so with adding the speedster nd about 6" for the ramp thickness I'm at 105"   My thought is Speedster on top- backed in which buys me some room for the garage door clearance after I raise it to the ceiling as Robert suggested.  So in essence I have about 6-7" for clearance....it's should work.

I'd like to find an installer in the SF Bay Area who's familiar with this to have them come out and walk through it with me before I move forward with purchasing  lift.

If anyone knows of an installer in the SF Bay Area- please let me know.

I’m actually on the fence about a 356 or 550 - maybe going with the lower car is the way to solve my dilemma.

How big are you? If you're taller and thicker than the Universal Average American Male, the decision might have already been made by your physiology. The more you look like a gorilla, the less likely you are to fit in a Spyder.

Assuming you do fit, and don't look like my avatar sitting on (not in) in a Spyder-- you're going to find that Speedsters and Spyders are a lot like the difference between Mom's and Grandma's apple pies.

They're both pie, and they are readily distinguishable as such-- but they are different in many subtle and significant ways. Grandma's pies use a sweet apple, and have cinnamon sprinkled in. They're sweet and wholesome, and everybody loves them.

Mom's pies are made with tart apples, and have a sweet/tart balance that both attracts and repels people. They aren't for everybody, but they're award winning for people who like the bite. You either love mom's pies, or you shy away from them at the family reunion potluck-- there's not a lot of middle ground.

You can guess which is which. But the thing is, not everybody even likes apple pie. Lots of folks want a chocolate silk or pecan pie, or would really rather eat cake and ice cream.

Try before you buy. I'd certainly not make a decision based on how low the car is. You can make either car fit in your garage.

You could hide a really righteous subwoofer under that hard tonneau, too.

Yes. For the weight.

@Blake The 550 I have built will be for sale shortly. There's a long thread here so I won't blow the horn more. Only things left to do are set the Black Box ignition curve and dial-in the carbs using the wideband o2 sensor.

You will find that these steps are seldom done by builders or pre-owners, and probably account for a significant percentage of the reason you see used ones on sale at or about 500 miles. Sorting is crucial.

The car I've built will be priced outrageously, however, so I'll understand if it doesn't suit your budget or interests at this time. DM me if you want more info.

Thank you Stan - I get your point....I’ve been here (on this site) a long time and have always planned to get a 356 - then the pandemic hit and an opportunity to get a great house came up so jumped on that- but the garage height isn’t as tall as I’d like so trying to make it work without giving up any toys! I’d like to pull the trigger and get something ordered with Greg in the next couple months so just working through the options. My safety default choice is the speedster for sure. I’ll think I’ll fit in either - on average in size - 6 feet 185 pounds.

I've got a 4-post lift, Blake.

Yes, your garage will be tight, but if you get the garage-door track as close as possible to the ceiling, install a jackshaft opener, and get some low-profile LED lights, you'll be able to store either car in the garage.

The thing is, you don't need to put the 4-post lift all the way up--  there are ratchet points along the way (about every 4 inches). Realistically, all you need to do is add the height of the two cars in question, and add 6" for the height of the runners and what you'll need to get the top car off the ratchet.

As you pointed out above, you have room. Buy the car you want.

Speaking of primate size you might also look at your body proportions if your really tall in the body that is a bigger challenge to fit below the windshield of a speedster but on the other hand on a spyder, your in the wind completely and you might need or rather will need the head covering at least of this outfit.

BTW if your north of the 49th late fall the full outfit works too.
