I’ve done it now. The king of all bonehead moves. I must have dropped my ignition key to the Speedster at Laguna Seca while pulling my phone out to take photos.  My Speedster is currently in the lot

Just weighing in some options.

Many thoughts would be very helpful.

Thank you in advanced.

If you just need to get home, it's really easy to hotwire.  Just pull 2 wires off the back of the ignition, the switched power and the starter solenoid.  Move the switched power to the hot power lug and tighten it in place (it will stay there until you have to turn the car off by removing that wire) then touch the starter solenoid wire to the hot lug to crank the motor and remove it as soon as it starts.

If you don't care to crawl under the dash or unscrew the switch from the dash to let it hang  ..You can connect a simple jumper wire from B+ on alternator to + on coil ….( this gives you 12v ignition just push and pop the clutch and you're good to go....  I would steal the Principal's Beetle in HS in similar fashion.    Best to utilize Carey's method :~)

Merklin....you bring back some memories. WAY back in the late '60's I was a general gofer type guy at a downtown Woolworth store. ( Sparks Street, Ray ). A buddy's Father sold Datsuns then and I told the Boss we could get a small pickup into the center aisle for a promo. So it went and the first night we got into it with batt to coil or whatever, one screw driver to launch the + across the starter and we had a running motor. We moved a line of center aisle bunks away and had at it. I laid a patch about 10' long in the center aisle with the Datsun PU.  Same store I threw Chuck Berry out of.....shame )-:

Thanks for your help again everyone. Laguna Seca is allowing me to keep it there. It’s a pretty secure lot.

I thought it may be just as simple to purchase a replacement ignition from a local auto parts store, as someone mentioned.

Mim not near the car now, and should have removed the ignition before leaving Laguna Seca.

Could anyone provide me details of what ignition switch I should purchase from a local auto parts store?

As as a side note, I was able to get great video and photos of some amazing vintage Porsches racing around the track. One in particular was neck and neck with a. DB4, until the DB4 lost it.  I’ll share in a bit.

Stop. This is really very simple.  Don't make it worse by panicking. God damn it man. Hold yourself together. You'd never last a day in the zombie apocalypse. I pray for our future.

Carey gave you the info you need.  You need to do two things. Provide 12v to the starter to crank it. And 12v constant to keep the coil/ignition excited.

Worst case. I can be there in 44 mins. As luck would have it my calendar is free.

Call me. 408-425-3074

No big deal. These cars are pretty simple.

Kevin, the back of the switch in my 2013 VS looks kinda like this:

IgnitionSwitch01

There are FOUR terminals (only three show clearly in this photo)

- The top terminal has the heavy red wire from the battery (and another red wire, too)

- The terminal towards the passenger side has a black wire that goes to the coil.

- The terminal towards the driver's side has no wires connected (it's the 'accessory' terminal). If you've got some electrical accessories that come on when the ignition is on, you may have a wire or two connected to that terminal, but my car came from VS with nothing hooked up there.

- The terminal in the middle (positioned higher than the other three) has a smaller gauge red wire that goes to the solenoid (for starting the car).

And oh, the nuts are 9mm.
