Aloha,

This might not be legal/honest...but you could have it re-titled by one of those titling companies (can't think of the names right now) as a 1955 Beck Spyder Replica, or something along those lines. Then, register it in another state, then re-register it in California with the new title from the previous state. Voila, smog exempt.

The best way to avoid smog, is to check your engine block to see when it was built, as long as it's older than 25 yrs, you'll be ok when you go to the smog check place at the "bureau of auto repair". If you have a new engine block, find a buddy with an old vw bug, and swap engines for the weekend and you are all set. When I origionally put my spyder together, the whole registration deal was a drag, but once I had an eary engine block put in, the dmv just makes me send in all my paperwork every two years and its a piece of cake. Your car will most likely be registered as a model year 2oo4,with an * denoting that it is a special constructed vehicle. And dont let the cops give you any shit about no bumpers or crap like that... My brother once cut out some styrofoam from and ice chest, and taped them to his car to get a real chicken shit ticket signed off. Good luck...D.hauptman beck #242
Robert: try calling Luke Richards at Precious Metal Autos in San Diego (858 705-4400 or www.pmautos.com). He was able to title the Beck Spyder that I purchased from him as a '57 Beck. When I brought it to Arizona to register it, the title transferred as a '57. No smog and $25/year to register.
