Bought the car with 4700km have put on 800km in the last few months and find I've used a quart of oil. Contacted Pat Downs at CB Performance was told that some rings ( the top Chromium rings) tend to seat with more difficulty. Any suggestions from the experts. Thanks for your time. Karl Dempwolf
Karl,

Are you seeing any oil smoke? You didn't mention any. Seems to me that at 500mi/qt, you'd be seeing smoke if the rings weren't seated.

If there isn't any smoke, and there are no obvious leaks or blowby, I think I'd change/top up the oil and measure the consumption again before I started worrying about unseated rings (Which should have been seated long before the 4700km mark).

Just my opinion.

Karl: I've got a 1600 in my crew cab that the rings have never seated even with 30,000 miles on the engine. The only problem occurs once in a while when I start up, it belches a cloud of smoke.

Also, on hot days, VW's will blow oil via the breather tube. In Arizona, its the heat that causes oil comsumption. In the summer time, I'll easily run through a quart a month (+/- 500 miles).
Thanks for all the helpful comments: Pat Downs wrote that with the sump on my engine, the oil level should be only up to the low mark on the dip stick. His point being that the car has too much oil in it and is burning it off. At the low mark the oil light comes on however. So Pat wisely suggested I check the oil pick up tube to make certain it did not come off or is otherwise resticting oil pick up. No it is not blowing smoke, and I have the oil level between the high and low marks on the dip stick. Thanks for your time. Karl Dempwolf
