I completely agree but if someone hasn't done that and they don't get around to changing it, or even updating their loss coverage, it might be worth trying.

I am also glad you made it basically unscathed; bummer about the car and I’m surprised as to how it didn’t sustain more damage. Maybe it could be fixed by qualified people but at least with the insurance payout you can start on the path to replacing it.


Re the silver car from Cloud 9; I did notice some type of peculiar frame under the rear of the car; it is visible in the left underpan photo and the first side photo of the car. This is the first time I’ve seen such a thing in all my years of ownership; anyone have an idea what this is?

What I think you are seeing in the rear photo is the engine traction bar, and the left side photo looks like an oil cooler to me.

I looked at the video and could look at it more clearly; it is a rectangular tubular frame that goes across from side to side somewhere under the transaxle. I’ve seen käfer bars and the transaxle mid mounts such as the weld-on from Gene Berg and the Empi ones with the red urethane pads but this is the first time I see something like that. Wonder where it came from and its purpose.

I watched the video, and it’s definitely not a Berg style traction bar, they went under the motor.  
Here’s my second guess: The car has AC,  possible that they mounted the condenser under the car, right below the torsion tube?

Same thing for house values and home insurance in most places. I have unique house without direct comparables. A combination of appreciation/speculation and major renovations had my house virtually double in price in the last few years. I re-did my home insurance last Fall with agreed upon value (huge rip off ..... until you need it)

Thanks guys the car was a vintage speedster built in 2013. I drove it like a bat out of hell and never had any problem as after yesterday made me think alot. My back left tire hit a pot hole on a fwy transfer ramp it made the car do a 180 which I think the pot hole blew the tire out then it just started to flip/roll on the driver side from the speed and there happen to be that hill there but at some point the car did another 180 and flip back up right going in the same direction. First of all, absolutely LUCKY to walk away. I know this as I walked away from a totaled Spyder in 2016. I didn't roll over though...

What are your plans? Do you want another car just like it? Are you mechanically inclined?

If so, get a quote on how much the buyback is. My buyback was only a few thousand dollars. I stripped the old car clean. Motor, trans, suspension, brakes, seats, lights, wiring harness.

It is VERY possible and not too hard to build it again. Get a new pan and a new body/subframe. Then transfer all the good stuff over. This is what I did, and I got the car I REALLY wanted. Having that second chance can be a GREAT opportunity.

I'm 100% positive you can take 30-something thousand dollars and build a new one, even sub-contracting things like paint.

I ran the numbers and as Danny said buy it back form the Insurance Company ( you as the owner have first salvage rights) what the actual cost may be great varies anywhere from a couple of grand up to 20% of the ACV payout to you. Example if they pay out $38k even at the max of 20% = $7,600 so you would actually get $ 30,400 and the Speedster with a branded Salvage Title. Pick it clean for a new build and sell what is good but you don't want to use.  .. I would do this in a heartbeat.
