Re: Ignition Timing and Idle Speed

I have a 2,332cc motor equipped with twin Solex/Kadron carburetors and Magnaspark distributor and coil.

When I set the timing to 30-degrees BTDC at 3,000 rpm, I can't idle the engine down to 900-1,000 rpm, notwithstanding the idle-stop screws backed all the way out. So my resolve was to retard the timing until I could idle the motor at 1,000 rpms with the throttle-stop screws just barely supporting the throttle plates.

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon and if so, did you live with it or correct it?

Maybe your throttle cable needs to be loosened? You could still be pulling the throttles open slightly even if the stop screws are backed out.

Or you have a vacuum leak.

Most guys on here have either Weber or Dell one barrel per cylinder carbs(Weber IDF or Dell DRLA).

I do know that the intake manifolds used with the Solex carbs should have a built-in channel to let air leak between the intake ports. You should contact the engine builder to verify what to do if the problem isn't in the linkage or a vacuum leak.
