Hi everyone... newbie here. I finally got my Beck Spyder and will take delivery of it in the next couple of days. I wanted to see how others are insuring their car since I'm finding this a challenge. So, the question is, are you insuring through your "normal" insurance or through a "specialized" insurance like Hagerty, Grundy, etc.?

I've got a spotless driving record and own other cars for daily driving. I thought I'd go with Hagerty or Grundy but when speaking with them, they have all these restrictions like you cannot use as a back-up vehicle to drive to work (not that I would drive to work every day in it but I'd like to driving it on occassion during great weather days), cannot run errands in it, and basically cannot drive it unless I'm coming or going to a car show or some sort. So, if I'm dropping off my son to school on a random Tuesday morning and get into an accident, I'm going to have a hard time explaining what car show I was going to.

I have also asked my regular insurance company but they want double the amount as Hagerty, Grundy, etc. Is this the cost of having the freedom to drive your car when you want, where you want?

I'd appreciate any insight into what others are using for their insurance needs.

Thanks and looking forward to being a part of this great community!

I wonder if the Hagerty restrictions differ from agent to agent. I have their insurance on my Speedster and they were great about few limitations. As long as I have it stored in a garage at home, have a daily driver, and don't go wild on the miles they are fine. I asked about taking it to work and both folks I talksed to said they understand the desire to take it in a show it off a bit. As long I don't use it for that regularly, they had no problem. They also gave me no mileage limit, but asked that I limit it to a reasonable amount. We discussed in the 3000 range and they were fine. that should cover my local fun runs and the occassional local show, plus the annual trek to Carlisle.
Hmm... maybe it's poor luck on my end. It seems the two agents I've spoken to both have been very explicit about the situations when I cannot use the car. I've expalined that I have other daily drivers and only intend to drive my car about 3,000-4,000 miles a year. I explained that I may wnat to drive the car to work a couple of times a month during the summer, take a drive if i want to drive, run to the local store to grab milk, etc. (all within 3-4K miles) and they strongly suggested I talk to my "regular" insurance provider. I wish I got the speak to your agents first.
Call Hagerty directly, you do not have to go through an agent. I go direct and they are fantastic.

Oh, BTW, I'm reading/typing this sitting in Shanghai watching the sun set from teh 31st floor of my Hotel. Le Royal Meridian, great place, I highly recommend it if you come over here. Can't wait to get abck to the sates and my car....
I was in the exact same situation with my Speedster. I drive it to work (30 miles each way) 6 to 8 times a month, as well as run errands in it on pretty weekends. After much fretting, I finally decided to bite the bullet and insure it as a regular car. It's relatively expensive (about the same price as my wife's Accord), but it's worth it because I never have to worry or feel guilty about driving it when and where I like. Just my two cents.

Brian
Thanks everyone for your insight and experience. I can see myself in the same situation as Brian... the weather in Atlanta is generally good and want to drive what I want, when I want. So, I think I'll also safe myself the guilt and go insure it like my other cars. Thanks again everyone.
