Interesting article in Classic Cars of the World. Ferdinand Porsche son Ferry with Karl Rabe created the 356. These days Porsche stands for precision, performance, purity, and perfection, and the 356 is the first chapter in that story. The 356 was so named because it was actually the 356 th project from the Porsche design office since it was set up1930. Also the first car to bear the Porsche name.
