I recently bought a CMC speedster. It is titled as a 1989 assembled vehicle, and has a Missouri assigned vin.

I would really like it to have a 55-58 Porsche replica title and not a big fan of the MO assigned vin #. Any suggestions would be great!

I'm worried when I go to sell it down the road it may have to meet emmisions because of its 1989 title!

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Since every state has motor vehicle registration laws that are somewhat unique, you will need to either contact the Missouri motor vehicle folks or talk to someone in Missouri that has been through the process. How they do it in other states will have little value for you. The registration procedure for collector cars/replicas is in flux, with SEMA supplying support to all the states, in the hope of developing a coherent national policy. To date, some states are far ahead of others in offering a convenient method of registration. Do some research on line with web sites like the cobra replica folks and factoryfive have. Best of luck and welcome!

In the past, I have transferred vehicles on the registration. GA will not title older vehicles but will let you register a car in the year it looks like. Two weeks ago, I sold a 1953 Jaguar XK120 replica and moved it from GA to TN without a problem. Its VIN was assigned by SAS but I suspect TN gave it a new VIN (a little silver sticker).

It seems to me that you are trying to fix a problem that you cannot define until you sell the car. I have another replica with an AZ VIN and title and a GA registration (GA will not re-title older cars). The Creme Brule Coupe has a GA registration and no title. It has an SAS-assigned VIN. The 1937 Bugatti Atlantic replica (recently featured on Chasing Classic Cars) is a whole different story.

I would be happy with a MO or any title but in most cases have to live with the registration document. Jim Kelly's observations are sound.
After 23 years of putting my CMC together, I finally got it registered and titled in January, 2011...in Missouri. It is titled as a 1957 Porsche. Elsewhere on the MO title, the word "Replica" is stated. The process is time consuming...about 3 months. You need to download and printout pages 11-7 thru 11-14 from http://dor.mo.gov/forms/Missouri_Titling_Manual.pdf and this form: http://dor.mo.gov/forms/108.pdf . On page 11-12, you will note it states: "Please note that in Missouri motor vehicles are titled by appearance. Example: If a 1978 Chevrolet body is attached to a 1979 Ford frame, the vehicle will be titled as a 1978 Chevrolet.". The info on the back of form DOR-108 will be helpful to you.

Since I have no idea where you live, if you do NOT live in MO, then disregard what I have told you since it will not help you.
I am trying to register my 57 in MD from NC and I thought I could get Historic plates. They're telling me that I have to get Street Rod plates. Not sure why I have a problem with that, but I do. I'm still happy that I don't have to get emissions, tho. Any one else have tagging issues? My title says 83 Porsche Convertible.

"In Maryland, an antique vehicle is also called a Historic Vehicle as is defined as any motor vehicle that was manufactured at least twenty years ago and is used as a collector's item and has not been changed from its original design. If a vehicle is more than twenty-five years old and has gone through major changes from the original design, it is called a Street Rod."

Wonder if it having a Speedster body or never available flares is the issue?  In VA an Antique is 25 years, In NC it's 35 and FL it's 30.  Yet in FL a senior citizen is 55 - go figure.
