Those look like the EMPI brand filters that come standard on many VS.  you also seem to have the empi hardware mounted on your carb ( pictured), and why I'm guessing the filters are the stock EMPIs that came with the setup.

i had a set... one caught fire a season or two ago.  I purchased the K &N replacement ones, and K&N red oil at my local Autozone,  been running great since.

CB also sells an oil, blue color, which makes it easy to confirm the entire filter has been treated.

better safe than sorry... new filters are cheaper than a new car ( if the filter catches fire).

Thanks will look into them

And, speaking of fire...

In their haste to make more Speedsters than anyone else, VS seldom bothered to install a simple rubber grommet where the fuel line passes through the sharp fiberglass edges of the bulkhead.

A simple fix that could keep your bacon from frying some day.

Interesting. . . Last week I noticed the same thing on my VS so I bought a set of various sized rubber grommets at Harbor Freight just to keep on hand but none of them would fit properly.  Therefore, I've got to make one out or a larger piece of hose.  Should be a simple fix.

MHO.....Use 1/4" (or your preference to size) steel tubing from where you connect to the copper (usually on a VS) tube where it comes out of the chassis center tunnel, all the way up through the firewall to your pressure regulator (or filter or whatever). This way there is only two little short, two inch pieces of rubber tubing subject to failure rather than, say, 16 inches of hose exposed.  DO use a rubber grommet in the firewall on the steel tubing as well. Hose clamps of course.......Bruce

Another neglected area on a VS is where the battery cables go thru the fiberglass up in front. Yes, it's fiberglass and not conductive but fiberglass is abrasive and over time from movement, it will wear the the insulation thus creating bare wire on the battery cables and potential for something to fall on it and create a serious fire problem. Large split grommets work well here and if anything, create a much more finished look.

If you have been around automotive stuff a lot things like this just jump out at you and slap your face. It's best to take care of them as soon as you discover them......Bruce

Bruce,

Great idea - and following your instructions I fixed mine this afternoon using a couple of grommets that can be bought at Harbor Freight.
