I have a CB Performance 21(??) motor and its got around 3,500 KM on it. What can I do to really get more power out of this motor? I bought the car from Automotive Legends and it runs great and it is fast... but I'd like even faster. Any share points?

Also, what maintenance should I perform on the car at 3,500 + KM? Is there anything I need to be preparing for? I'm a newbie to VW motors. Thanks gang.

Hi Scott,

Your 21++ anything from CB should give you lots of go. It is probably good on the dyno at 150 or more hp. Not bad for a 1400 lb. car.
If you are new to the VW engine platform, you might want to spend some time with a real specialist (like Larry, for example). Your engine is quite a bit more high strung than the standard 40 hp VW. And, it requires more tinkering periodically to keep it at the top of it's tune. It might be that the only thing wrong with your engine's performance is it needs to be touched up.

But if you are still "wanting", you can $pend $ome real money on $eriously hot-rodding up the engine to the point of semi-reliable 200 hp. If that's still not enough, $pend even bigger money and go fuel injected turbo.

If that is really, really the way you want to go, then pull the VW and replace it with a Subaru. Now you can go high revving and box-stock with 200 hp. Or, 250 hp with a stock turbo.

Of course anything you do beyond what you already have is going to also require some additional thinking about your transaxle -- you'll probably want a Quaife. And, how much power did you think you were going to put to those skinny little tires before more power is just wasted in wheelspin?

Obviously your car is new, and one of the really nice ones at the high end of the price range. If it were me, before I started mucking around with trying to go whole-hog on the VW, I'd give Greg a call and price him to do a Subie conversion. If you'd like to see your car again in this lifetime, see if Larry will do it. In any case, you would do well to make an appointment with Larry to appraise the running condition of the engine you already have.

Scott....I would ask if you want "FAST" or "QUICK"....Either way a beefed up tranny is required (You probably have one) with a final drive to suit your desires....4.12/4.36 for "QUICK" or 3.88 for "FAST". (Using stock VW parts)...Beck used to run 2165cc as their big motor from CB Perf., but I'm not sure what you would have....

The 1915cc unit I use is strong and powerful enough for my purposes, touring at speed, with acceleration as a nice back up.....Minimal wrench bending when sorted out.....
