Hi Speedsters,
About 12 months ago I bought an Apal fitted with a reconditioned 1700cc type 1 motor with a mild cam, Monza exhaust and twin Scat (?) carbs.I love the car and drive it everywhere in preference to my Carrera 3.2.
I have found the performance modest but acceptable but on long country runs I was pulling 3,400 rpm at 60 mph and the motor sounded like it was redlining (I know it wasn't-just sounded that way).
The reconditioned 'box is from a 1300 beetle and has a 1.05 ("Kombi" I was told by the rebuilder) top gear.
I wanted a more relaxed cruiser so I have purchased from Rancho transmissions an upgraded box with standard ratios but a 3.44 Ring and pinion combo.I was concerned about the ability of the present type 1 motor to pull the taller diff and still have acceptable performance so....I have purchased from a fellow Speedster owner, a near-new 2 litre type 4 motor-standard with twin Solexes and custom twin-exit exhaust.
Does this sound like a sensible combo for what I'm after (comfortable country cruising) ?
Anyone out there with such a combo who can comment ?
Thanks,

I don't think that there is a heater box for the Type 4 conversion. That's why I installed an Espar heater.

My Type IV is 2,056 CC with 4.120 R/P and at 66 MPH I'm seeing 2955 RPM. The engine has enough torque to handle this RPM plus amazing pick up all the way up to "get locked up" speed.

Congrats on coming over to the dark side!

Talk to Jake Raby who is the Type IV Master.
