I took mine to a muffler shop and had an 18" glass pack installed, and extended the tail pipe 3 " past the rear of the car to keep the exhaust from discoloring the rear of the car....Tail pipe should have been about 2" longer.......If your present muffler is the same as my original unit, it has nothing inside it.....Its just a tin can..... Use your imagination ....I had a section of 3" exhaust tubing welded on as a tail pipe, formed into an oval and routed to clear the clam shell, when raised......
I tried to , but there is too much movement during acceleration and it would tear up the hanger or bend the hanger mount.......It didn't seem to be a problem to just weld it on and let it hang.....Just be careful about the clamshell clearance....Position and weld with the clamshell in the raised position.... Good luck and enjoy...
Leon,
I just went under car to see how a 18"x5" glasspack would work. The trans mount on the Beck hangs down about 7/8" below the cross member of frame. If I cut that portion off, I think that a 5" dia. would work. Do you think by cutting that lower 7/8" off mount will compromise the mount?
Thanks
Mike
If you are talking about the crossmember, don't cut it....I cut off all external tubing on the muffler and cut the old can off as far toward the front of the car as I could and just squeezed the new glass pack in.....You could probably pass the muffler under this crossmember without a problem clearance wise....Its usually the tail pipe dragging on dips and sharp inclines.....Flattening the tail pipe (oval shape) gives a little extra clearance....

Spyder chasis vary a lot from car to car, but you should be able to fit it in nicely.....Check with a "mom and pop" muffler shop as they are more likely to work with you without the large price tag.....

Not the cross member. The rear trans mount is bolted to the cross member and about 7/8 of an inch of the mount hangs below the cross member. That 7/8 of an inch causes the muffler to be lower to the ground. The part hanging down is metal and rubber. The bolts that hold it to the trans are above the bottom of the cross member.
Any other thoughts
I've used supertrap mufflers on rotary engines. No matter what combination of discs I put in, I never got one quiet but it was very good at breaking up the frequency. I would describe it as somewhat quieter but still quite loud. The change in pitch made it a much more pleasant drive.
