Another coupe. Greg has a few coupe bodies previously made. He’s not actively making coupe bodies and he’s not currently taking orders for coupe. A little groveling got me the coupe. This will be my 4th Vintage in 24 years. Can’t wait to go out and see the new (old) shop. I ordered my first Spyder in 1998 out of that shop. Well Greg’s shop was actually in the current upholstery garage. Greg had a little piece of the building. The majority of it was the old Vintage Speedsters.

Wait, WHAT?!?

@550 Phil - you've been talking for months about having a Convertible D built by Carey and company. As recently as last week, you were talking about copying the blue Emory outlaw roadster. Now, here's a coupe body in California you're claiming as your own.

There's a story here (I'm guessing you took over somebody's abandoned project), but this is exactly the place to tell it, and I can't wait to hear it.

Dish, man.

That Emory is actually a Pre A Coupe as is this replica. I reserve the right to be fickle. Just went in a different direction. Almost 2 years ago when I talked to Greg he told me he’d save me a place in line. He told me I’d be calling and he was right. Carey was a true professional allowing me to bow out. I think there are plenty of folks behind me in the queue that are happy to move up. Greg has built me three cars. He’s been my friend since 1998. It’s meant to be. And I’m building that Emory with a beastly Pat Downs Type 4.

Gotcha' Phil. You're right - I was thinking of somebody else (me?) with the blue car. You've been consistent with your desire for the gray coupe.

I know you've had a million of Greg's cars over the years, and I know how you love your Spyder. I'll be anxiously watching your choices with this one.

The big T4 sounds like my perfect engine.

There's a guy in the Boston area 356 club who found a barn find Pre-A coupe and rather than leave it alone, as he does with the few barn finds he comes across, he had this one professionally restored by Meister Engineering in New Hampshire.  They debuted it at German Car Day in Boston in 2015 and it has since sold in the low-mid six figures.  Thought you'd like to see it.

He got all upset that I parked my lowly "replica" right behind him, but the guy's pretty forgettable, to be honest.  Meister did a fabulous job on it, though.

The faceplate of the Telefunken is where the magic is, and it's not all that special. I'd think you could just make something (laser-cut stainless?) that would accept a single DIN head with knobs (like a retrosound) in the traditional place, then cover the top (speaker) area with speaker fabric. If you made that panel removable, you could integrate a phone mount behind it, and just use your smarty-pants phone as your Car-play display (after removing the speaker fabric panel).

... but you do you. I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Yes I actually would like to have a 901 5 speed but Greg lately has been in the keep things simple mode. And that’s really fine with me. As long as I can have a 3.44 R&P to allow me to get on the highway that’s fine. Definitely going with an early 70’s pan with IRS. Greg has been working on the Danny P rack and pinion steering which I would really like to have. Greg says it’s a bolt in for a 356.

Michael. Just got off the phone with Greg. Talking most about my build. But I did convey your concerns. Obviously your car is well into construction. Your car is a Subaru with heat and AC etc. A much more complicated car than my car with a Type 4 with no heat AC ventilation etc. Your car will likely be finished a year before mine. I know how these things go. I built the first Subaru Spyder ever with Greg and waited forever.  Ordered it in 2000 and got it in 2003. You I assume have the first Subaru Pre A. Being the first is always painful. Other than Outlaw cosmetics I’m keeping my car as simple as possible. We are both going to get awesome cars.

@550 Phil Great news Phil I think you should go with a 5 speed you might like the 915 a bit better then the 901 and it would allow you to get the TypeIV and row it around the curves easier. The 3:44 is good but the spacing of 3rd and 4th is not my favourite having lived with it for 5 years.

I have to say that while I like my Retrosound, I am getting hearing challenged and using a phone through it is not very easy, if your piping music via BT and the ringer sounds off it will make you jump out of your skin.

I am often thinking of getting a second system to handle each seperately, music or phone.

The 58 dash is pretty nice and Brian I think is working on Cloud, but the nicest replica is the Continental that Greg did in white if I remember right.

I for one am a fan of the A body.  Good for you.

We have a couple VW bugs with 901 gear boxes , the gearbox fits pretty good between the frame horns , but a 915 box is much larger and is not going to fit so you will need to figure a way to mount the 915 box by welding up new frame horns or hanging it like a 356.

Also you will need to learn to not hate the 5 speed shift pattern with the dogleg  1st gear ,

PS:  they do make a 4 speed 901 -902 box that was mostly in the 912

Phil,

I know, and really, folks should know that a coupe isn't twice as much work as a speedster, it's 3 times as much work. And I went Subaru (now 4 times) and I went off the reservation on several other things (AC/Heat, LED lighting, some interior mods, different brakes, etc. etc.) I'm at least responsible for half the extra time it's taken. It'll be great when it gets here, and I'm sure Greg will knock it out of the park.

Greg and I talk regularly, mostly...I get crazy busy sometimes, and we have a great relationship.  I don't want folks to get the idea that this is normal. Nothing about this coupe is normal! I've made this one really hard. If I'd gone big type 4 (Stan is rolling his eyes at me) I'd have had the car a while ago. But I'm ok with it. I want what I want.

We need to plan a gray coupe get together!

Michael

Or, get away from weird shift pattern, crappy P synchros and do a Berg 5...

Yep Michael I think anyone building during COVID probably added another 6 months to their build. And whatever Greg tells me my delivery time is I’ll add another 6 month. Anxious to see your completed car. Hope to get out to LA some time soon.

I'd say at least a year with supply chain problems.  I know it did on my build.  Indiana had a couple of lock-downs, some people didn't come back, and supplies were problematic, so I think 12 months is the minimum COVID delay.
