I ordered a new 2110 engine for my vintage Speedster from Larry Dawson at Gex. My mechanic from Nortown Auto, who build and races cars, could not receive the engine since Larry did not ship it in a truck with a lift gate. LARRY's response lift the crate out of the truck, really WTF. I had to pay for a truck with a lft to return the engine. the mechanic then installed the new engine based on the specs provided by GEX. The engine was a lemon. After running for an hour you would turn it off but then couldn't restart it.

We shipped it back and Larry who said he would fix it. However he didn't do anything to the engine and just shipped the engine back. We installed the engine again with the same problems. Larry continued to charge for the shipping of the engine.

After promising to send out a new engine Larry called and said he didn't want to send out the new engine because the same problems might occur again. When I asked for a refund of the $3799 he told me there would be a 20% restocking fee and then he charged me for the return shipping.

This was the worst experience ever. You have no leverage when you return the engine, and he claims it's you mechanics fault. Even George from Nortown auto could not believe Larry's claims blaiming the problems on the install twice on the mecahanic even after the install was video taped the second time!!

GEX is sham! I would never recommed the purchase of one of their engines.

I am sorry that another person is screwed by GEX. They have specialized in glossy adds and shitty motors for years. You really should have done a little research on this company. They are to VW as Motormeister is to Porsche. Don't believe anything they tell you. You are already screwed, but try to get something. It won't be much.
Performance workshop in Riverside is doing a 2007cc for me. The first run on the dyno was 128hp. These guys are great! They do mild to wild. Greg was a national champ in his class just a couple years back. I did a ton of research to find the best and they ended up being 5 miles from me. They have been around for over 30 years and when looking for anything bad on them I came up with nothing. I highly recommend them.
I'm sure they know each other, but a part of Car Craft? I don't believe so. Steve Tims was a drag racer of note in the '70's and has had his own shop (Performance Workshop) for 20 years or more.

Christian- GEX is one of the scourges of the VW industry. You would be doing a great service if you related your experience in the feedback forum on the Samba. When you find the GEX thread you'll see you're not the first, and I'm sure you won't be the last...
