Hey all....

New to Speedsters but not to cars or forums

Owned many classics including some VW's.  I have been itching to get a 356 but don't want the stress of owning an original (I want to drive it)

I am looking forward to learning about the car, but from what looks like... I am ahead of the game since they share common parts with VW's  !

Thinking I'll go the pre-owned route, something in the neighborhood of $15k+

I'd like the car to be a bit more zippy than something with a 1600 in it. Would an 85hp engine do the trick or should I look for something upwards of 100hp?

Thanks all... can't wait to start this new obsession!

Welcome to the madness, brother.  You've come to the right place. There are dozens of speedster knuckleheads in Socal. I'm sure you will get a chance to see and drive one of these fun mobiles not too far from where you are. I think in Cal you might be best off buying one that's already registered there but I think others here know more about that.  There are always some great cars for sale in the classifieds here and everyone here can help you keep it going.  Misery loves company.

Thanks Aldog... the search is part of the fun for sure!

I am also registered on TheSamba as I have a couple VW's and I see 356's pop up on there once in a while.

Are there any other reputable websites who are semi-dedicated to the 356 replica?
Craigslist people tend to be flaky and eBay is well... eBay, which tends to fetch top dollar for items listed.

Also, the mid-20s ($) range contact Vintage Speedsters in Hawaiian Gardens. Probably 20 minutes from your location. Worth an hour of your time!

I like the idea of picking up a Brand New one but I also like the idea of picking one up that is used with a few more options around the same price.

Thanks for the tips, I will FOR SURE be keeping a look out.

I'll def check them out, maybe I'll go up this Friday since I have it off

Oh very cool! I'm close to PCH and Crenshaw

Any friendly pointers when picking one out?

I'm really partial to the Silver exterior 356's

I will be selling my 64 Notchback here shortly also.  So if you know of anyone interested, let me know

I am located off the intersection of Crenshaw & 235th...Marble Estates...

You should come over & have a scotch & a chat some afternoon...I usually work mornings

Sounds good... you are a mile or so away from me!
When I take some pics of the Notch, I'll post em up.

Real quick:

Bone Stock unmolested Beige 1964 w/black plates and a rack.

Runs great etc... Nothing fancy, just a driver.

Probably ask $8k OBO

Has it's flaws as any VW from 64 does

Truckster welcome to the madness my new brother from that different mutha... the 356 is a pure race car built for the street and the passion we have for these tubs is evident here... You're in a good spot even if you join us for a ride prior to you pulling the trigger here...  As long as you buy the first round most of these MUGS around here won't mind a bit...

Speedster "D" Set'em up!
