New member saying hi

Hi there,

I am interested in a 550 spyder replica. I live in Southern california, and had a few questions.

I saw becks for about 22k

There is also vintage performance for 30K.

What is the difference between them?

Do you guys have any recommendations for newbies (I own couple of miatas, new turbo and a older one) and a 996TT.

How are long term reliablity of the vw motors? I mean for 22K, the beck cars sound like a deal, especially since I was looking at some Elises.

What are the chances of daily driving them and realibility wise? Putting 10k miles on the beck?

Also are there used copies around, is that a feasible route?

It's just like buying any other car. You can get a Honda Accord anywhere from $22K to $30K or more...The difference? The variation in configuration. Same is true of Spyders. If you look around on the board you can find some VERY accurate reproductions going for well in excess of the cost of a new BoxsterS.

Is the VW based engine reliable? As reliable as they were in the 50's and 60's but you can't drive it 10K or even 5K miles without looking at it like you can a Miata. These cars are much closer to the 1955 Spyder than the modern car and they require constant vigilance and attention.

Drive it as a daily driver? A few....Well...One person on this board does. I once jokingly described her as "mildly masochistic" and she hasn't forgiven me yet. All I can say is thank god I don't have to drive mine as a daily driver. Don't get me wrong, I love the car, but in small doses on warm, sunny days.

Just my opinion.

Alot of people buy them, have them for a year or so and then sell them. That tells me that the cars don't meet their expectations. Don't expect it to be anything like a Miata. Expect noise, leaks, things to fix, oh, and depending on the powerplant, extreme fun for bursts.
