To answer Danny's question, if head gasket leak involves water, the clean chamber will be the one.  But looking at pictures, I can see the odd one out is carbony, so there ya go.

Jeni: Babs said she had enough of Carlisle last year.  You could Call her and talk her in to it, maybe ...

Glory Days Grill, Rte 15, noonish, Thurs.  see ya there.

Ed: If things go well here, and you need a pair of inexpert, but nevertheless useful hands, I could find my way to Wayward Ed's Classic Car Garage and Fixit Shop.  Pls advise.

And so The Weather -- prognosticators would have a drying spell settling in by Thurs.  We could only hope.

OK guys the engine is back in and she runs. New oil and filter, new coolant percolating in and I'll open all the bleeders tomorrow and hopefully get in a test drive.

Danny, FYI. This is an EJ22 from a 1995 Legacy. The head gaskets are from Fel Pro. It's the "Permatorque" line. The problem here is there don't seem to be any Multi Layer Steel gaskets for this engine. I searched for a week before buying these, which are just like what came out of it. I know the EJ25 went through at least three or four head gasket iterations and my googling research suggests that the newest Fel Pro MLS Permatorques—which are uncoated—are the hot setup. But, alas, what's made for the slightly smaller bore (and slightly less blown-HG-prone) 2.2 looks like something else entirely. I sprayed somma yer Permatex Copper on 'em for good luck.

And, again: my theory (which is mine) as to why these blew is because I neglected to open the bleedin' blinkin' bloody bleeders before motoring out of the garage after her long winter's nap. Not good.

Good deal Ed.

I spent the evening after work replacing rear brake cylinders and shoes and springs. One of the springs on the rear passenger side was broken and allowed the cylinder to pop open under braking and was leaking out. Inside the drum was a nightmare. Anyway all cleaned, replaced and back together. Tomorrow night I need to bleed the brakes and adjust and test. While up on jack stands I will adjust valves as well. Cutting it close - hopefully no supprises.

Y'all know me, I'm in for wrenching duty. Jim, Ed, whoever, bring it!

Ed, understood on the gasket situation. Pray to the God of Water that it doesn't leak! Aquaman maybe?

Yes, Kelly, the steam-cleaned brandy-new looking one was the leak. The other three were carboned up.

Shortly, as in this morning, I'll get my trailer weighed at a station then go to the DMV and get tags. Cutting in close? Yup. What else is new?
