Area code 414 is a telephone area code of the North American Numbering Plan for the area around and including the city of Milwaukee in the state of Wisconsin

An original windshield is very befitting an original car, but this is not the right market. We do own replicas, 1 of the reasons being that you can't modify and drive the snot out of an original Speedster with impunity like most here do (like, well, how Speedsters should be driven!).

Just out of curiosity- how much do you want for it?

Come on Al, you know the tune. Call or text only.

Not a scam, I am in wisconsin, 414 is a wisconsin area code. You guys should be a little more trusting. I've been a member of your forum for 10 years and have had 4 speedter kit cars.

@tacotuesday Your profile shows your signed up today. In today's day and age when someone signs up on a forum and lists an ad the first day on their very first post it tends to be a scam. Also any ad that requests contact via cell phones on the fist day also tends to be a scam. We have a PM system to take conversations away from the public profile where an exchange of information can take place that allows the possible buyer to get a better feel for the seller. That can also ask specific questions in an attempt to verify the realness of a seller also. Sign of the times my friend.

Yeah, it's outta my league! As I said, deserving of an original pedigreed car underneath it (I'm sure all my esteemed colleagues here will agree).

Two points:

1) We're "speedsterowners.com"-- if I didn't know we were into clown cars made down at the plastic Easter-egg plant, and I had some shard of the cross Ferry was hung on, I'd probably go ahead and post it for sale here as well.

2) It's ads like this (a $2000 piece of 40 year old glass) that make me really happy I'm just a schlub with a fancy dune-buggy.

OP: you may wanna' try the PCA website. We're more the PCCA (Plastic Clown Cars of America) set.

I was going to start a thread to discuss items like this but since others are commenting on this I'll bring it up here. I'm on several other forums and most require 25 or so posts before using the classified. This person just joined yesterday with only one thing in mind.

OK, ...I understand you made a typo - we all do occasionally - but what about this New Old Stock "Original" windshield for a 1957 model 356 Speedster "in factory box from 1980's ?"

Where was this windshield for the 30 years after 1957...prior to its being placed into a Porsche "factory box." For that matter, where was this box, and who had it for the next 30+ years until now?

Another "mistype?"

I am very surprised and embarased by the reaction to my post. Do you people have nothing better to do than heckle and harass people? The detectives on here see a new profile and assume everyone is a scammer, god forbid a guy accidentally types 1967 instead of 1967... I was a regular user on this site and purchased a speedster off it sometime around 2011, it's been so long I couldn't remember my username or password. I currently have 2 replica speedsters, and two very good friends with speedsters. Additionally, I know 2 guys with real speedsters. Assuming everyone that owns a plastic speedster likes real speedsters it doesn't seem unreasonable to get the word out on this site that the glass is available. Furthermore, this windshield was bought as part of a speedster project I bought off a guy on long island. He thought an original windshield would be really cool on his replica, I used a windshield off the shelf and saved it. So it's not out of the realm of reason that a guy would by it for a replica. In these days when a plastic speedster can be over 20 or even 30 thousand bucks, 2 grand isn't a ton of money. I think vintage speedsters gets 7 or 800 for a piece of glass these days.....

Perhaps the most distressing part of the reaction to my post was the complete lack of manners and decorum. Most of you wouldn't be a complete ass to someone you met at a swap meet or car show. Yet you attack like a bunch of animals at a new post. As us "car guys" age there is a real lack of interest in vintage vehicles among the younger generations. I constantly try to engage younger people who are interested in my cars. Rather than a don't touch sign, I encourage kids to look at my cars, climb inside, sit behind the wheel, whatever. I would hate to have a new and fresh guy to the speedster scene stumble onto you guys and be discouraged rather than encouraged to join and carry our hobby forward.

In my mind, if I see an ad am I'm nit interested, I move on. Why would you throw insults and call someone names? Would you act like that if you saw me on the street? If I don't like the price on an ad, I move on... I see no reason to beat the advertiser up over his price. And "it doesn't fit any of our cars" or "nobody on this site would pay 2 grand for a piece of glass." As far as I know it fits every speedster kit car on the planet, and can you really speak for everyone on the site as to the price and whether it would be appropriate on a kit car? Is it also your position that nobody on this site knows real 356 owners, hangs out around restoration or body shops, or has an interest in real steel 356 cars? Try practicing a little civility rather than flexing your finger muscles on the keyboard.

I also have extra trim, front and rear bumpers, a deck lid, and a very nice hand laid fiberglass toneau cover with a hump behind the drivers head. And a very nice pair of vintage original Bosch fog lights that would work on any german car, plastic or steel. I planned on listing these items individually but am waiting to see if the squealing following my first post die down.

To clear up the NOS issue. It is an original NOS windshield purchased in the 80's, for a 1957 car. You may be aware that manufactures do sell parts for models from previous years. The point is that these windshields have all been produced in south america for decades and this is west german, making it more valuable. It is new, it has never been installed. Try to find a used original west german speedster windshield, if you can find one, it's likely more than I;m asking. If you don't like the price or the description please move on. Trying to insinuate that I am a scammer or dishonest only reveals your character. I am just a car enthusiast who is trying to move some cars and parts.. nothing less, nothing more.

It is interesting though, I have cars and parts listed on 6 different sites right now. I'm sure there is at least one typo in every post and there are probably all kinds of people that think my price is too low or too high, but this site is the only place that other users felt it necessary to pick my post apart sentence by sentence and offer critiques and opinions. I'm sure there are many decent, fun, and knowledgeable guys on this site but the ones who are acting like children give a bad representation to all of you.

@tacotuesday

I'll respond since I initially thought you might be here to conduct a scam. In the past year we've had at least a dozen, maybe more, people who have signed up for on account on Monday and on Tuesday were trying to sell something. All of them were scammers. Here to collect email addresses, cell phone numbers, or deposits. It is the bane of the internet. You are correct in the sense that if I met you at a swap meet I might not treat you the same. That's because you'd be standing in front of me and I'd know you'd be a real person with a real windshield. Or at least a windshield I could inspect and try to authenticate. Not some scammer in a basement sending 1,000's of ads to hundreds of thousands of people trying to lure a few suckers.

Maybe you should have began you're new account, reintroduced yourself and explained about your inability to remember your old identity. Theron may well have been able to locate it and reactivate it. And if not then at least you'd have tried. Then try to sell the windshield. Maybe we could have not come on as strong. Or, instead of posting what amounted to a hit and run ad, explain that you know this is a replica site but that you have an original windshield to sell. Because in addition to scammers we've had several people start accounts and post items for sale and they have no idea this is a replica site.

That's my position and I speak for myself. Others may or may not feel the same.

Get over yourself.... The bottom line is no one on the SOC has any interest whatsoever in shelling out $2,000 for piece of four decades old curved glass, get it into your head, no one.

I may be off base, but my focus was not on the typos or inconsistencies in the ad.  I was focused on the style.  The way I was raised, I would pay in (become a supporting member) before trying to sell stuff to the members.  I realize becoming a supporting member is not a requisite, but to me it's the class thing to do.

My limited interest in this add waned when I saw the sellers “phone number”.  Any one spelling one or more of the numbers (don’t even get me started on the “ate” as opposed to the “eight”) always raises suspicion.  Primarily because when the actual number is provided it can easily be searched for validity and / or fake or fraudulent post(s) in the past.  Jumbling up the phone number with words typically means there is something to hide so it can’t be verified...not to make it “bot proof”.

One more thing: the VAST majority of items listed for sale on this site have at least one picture.  Unless I missed something I have yet to see any evidence this 1957 piece of glass in a 1980’s box actually exists.

The majority of us are not detectives as you stated.  We are, however, skeptical when an add such as yours contains multiples clues leading one to believe it is fraudulent.  Couple those clues with the overwhelming defensiveness you presented in several posts and it only raises more suspicion.

In hopes of ending this on a positive note: good luck with the sale.

I wish you luck in the sale. However, most of us aren't willing to invest 5% to 10% of the total value of our cars in a windshield. Doing so is inconsistent with the philosophy and reason for owning a replica.

Guys here, for the most part, are creating a dream on a budget or are just unwilling to spend outrageous amounts of money for original cars and parts that, while well built, have been duplicated for far less.

If I am willing to put a souped up vw or suby engine in my car, why would I be obsessed with the originality of the windshield?

I just think that this has proven to be the wrong audience for you.

But good luck.

A sign of the times:  if we can't agree on the response to Covid-19, how can we agree on the veracity of an ad for a windshield?

I never had any doubts that this was a serious ad, but perhaps misplaced here on SOC.

@Theron

Is there any chance we could do 2 things to help make the Classified sections useful?

  1. Require at least a $10 donation to the site before allowing anybody to post
  2. Shut off the ability for anybody but the OP to post on an ad

The running commentary, criticism, and opinions offered are never useful, and make us seem cliquey and kind of ridiculous.

With 99%  of the classified ads there are zero issues, however it's when someone aka Green & Taco posts questionable items then gets their panties in a wad puffing themselves up when they are asked about said item. Commentary does work for clarification on a particular item . What we all don't need is a seller dropping in from no where and admonishing everyone herein because they " know it all " .  I disagree charging a $10 spot for an ad because of one or two off the wall cases. Finally what we certainly don't need is too many rules and regulations.

Alan that is a good point.

This site is for replicas, original parts most times especially a high priced item like this or a set of Rudge wheels do you really think they belong on this site?

Maybe a steering wheel, but I see no reason to change the policy but I do think we do have a few scammers coming in to sell a few tacos and only to sell tacos and so the list regular members only want to know if the individual is real or a fake taco.  Even on Craigslist there are fake tacos.

The classified are for selling things.

They do not require third party "clarification", or uninterested parties telling a guy he's out of his mind, or public fraud alert. If a listing looks suspicious, we can always contact @Theron and ask that it be taken down.

A thing is worth what a buyer and seller agree that it is worth. 3rd (and 4th, and 5th) parties just muddy the waters. We can't sell on ebay, and we're the largest 356 replica site in the world.

I've always wondered why we feel the need to attempt to regulate commerce between two other parties. We're not the government.

The $10 thing was to shut off the "become a supporting member before you try to sell stuff" thing, because $50/yr (in perpetuity) to sell something is just stupid. A one-time, $10 donation for non-members is just the price of admission.

Helpful hint: Selling our replica speedsters on eBay is possible, the car needs to be  listed as Replica / Kits . No photos of scripts or emblems as well as no, reference to Porsche within the ad text. ..that's how you skirt the Porsche lawyers.

@Theron Or a minimum post count requirement to post the ad. Several other sites I'm on require 100 posts before placing an ad. It's pretty easy to tell when someone is gaming the system just to post an ad.

I believe the classifieds should be open to commentary.  After all, more than one of us may have some insight about whatever is for sale.  Not to mention that each of us follow other members.  I get notifications all the time about posts I never would have seen simply because someone I follow posted a comment.

Maybe posting a classified ad should require the seller to be a Supporting Member?  It seems to me the majority of ads are from that group.

That may weed out some unscrupulous sellers.

I like this!

@tacotuesday

Alas, you have fallen victim to the phenomena of "For-Sale-Police-Syndrome" (FSPS) on this forum (it exists on many on-line forums as well). Let me say that I consider my fellow SOCers as friends, but sometimes the urge to Correct, Assume, Distrust and Ridicule is just too overwhelming to resist. Once the backlash gains momentum, then you become the bull in the ring.

Additionally, membership or frequent posting on this forum would not necessarily shield you from FSPS.

Personally, as a paying member, I find this forum the best bang-for-the-buck in entertainment value. The caveat is to take the commentary on here with a grain-of-salt and enjoy the show.

As with any other social media I partake in, if a particular thread interests me, I read on. If not, I simply scroll past and move on to another post. Life is too short!

BTW, good luck with the sale of your windshield.

I'm sometimes tempted to post my 2020 Bentley SUV for sale at $225,000 once owned by Jon Voight  (Seinfeld episode) and let the arrows fly....but that would be too easy!

I think the price of becoming a member of the forum is a small price as compared to the audience you will be showing the part/car to, wouldn't guarantee its not a scam, but might filter out most one day wonders...
