NY registration

Has anyone registered a replica of any kind in NY? I am taking delivery of a VS next week (new) and never thought to call DMV until today. They tell me that I have to complete a "special" application, plus have the car inspected for stolen parts at a site 40 miles away???? And they won't inspect it until the paper work has cleared, maybe by the end of October! Does this sound right?

Have you asked Kirk at Vintage? I'm sure he has experience with this.

Art I got a title for my SB Speedster thru a title company listed on the kitcar.com website. I think it's called US Titles. They are located in Rochester, NY. You have to call & leave information their answering machine. They will then send you a package with pricing, forms etc. In turn they will send you an actual registration from a "dead" car from your year. Sounds fishy but it works. Cost about $300.00. They work thru a title agency in Georgia. I've tried others, but they were the only ones to respond.

I used US Title too. They used a dead registration from 1971 for a 1957 speedster. I "sold" them the car and they "sold" it back and provided the prior registration. In MA, I was then able to take the bill of sale and the prior registration and get the car registered in MA as it was older than 1980 (in theory at least) and that's the rule here. MA then issued an assigned title as well.

A guy that used to be on this board a lot, Jerry White, bought a VS in late 2000 from Classic Speedsters who resells VS cars. He had a devil of a time getting it registered in NY, but I believe he went the longer route you have outlined. If he's still registered, you may want to look him up in the owners area and email him for details on what he did.

A number of people i know use the above company. They do the same as far as buying (from you) and selling the car (on paper)back to you. This process has been around along time. This particular company lets you make up your own VIN number. A lot of the street rodders use it to get the paperwork they need for antique registration and insurance.

Thanks for everyones input. I did ask Kirk, he told me that he would register the car in Ca. It arrived with Ca. plates and registration with a title to follow in about 90 days. You couldn't ask for better service.

Where do you live in N.Y. I didnt have that luck with Kirk as a matter of fact had no luck at all. I registered my car with the calif title he sent me for the donor car and it is registered as a 67 VW. I was told in Dec. of 2000 you could not do the Calif. reg thing anymore oh well.
