I think most would agree that some improvement on filtering oil is a good idea however frequent oil changes have allowed that basic syetem which vw designed to successfully keep the flat 4 going on and on.
If you are using a stock oil cooler you can add an oil filter by replacing the oil pump cover with one made for that purpose.
If you have a remote cooler add one in line by the hoses that feed it. If you have an added sump you can put one in the sump, simmular to the OEM screen, though better filtration. Examples can be seen at motorworks.com & CBperformance.com.

George is totally correct- don't use CB's maxi-sump oil filter, if that is what it is called, i'm not sure exactly. It is a very, very bad idea to put a restrictor (filter) on the suction end of the oil pickup, as you are just asking to starve the engine of oil.
