Earmuffs, heck if I were going to 10K in my car, I'd want to wear a flak jacket. Something's coming thru the firewall.

There's a guy in Sweden named Johannes Persson who is producing some of the most exotic and excellent parts in the world for flat-4s. He's got a set of milled billet heads which can be used with 4" pistons and cylinders, for an engine that displaces around 3 liters. The heads sell for 31,425 Swedish Krona (fob: Sweden). That's $3845.12, as of right now. The guy's camshafts are $650 (for reference, an Engle is less than $100). As they used to say back in the day, you wanna' play, you gotta' pay.

Anyhow, there are no shortage of You-Tubes of him pulling crazy power out of tiny engines (a 1603 cc Type 1 pulling 160 hp, a 1915 spinning up to 9700 RPM, etc.).

It's entirely possible to spin 10,000 RPM in one of these engines. It's all about the money.

Get out your checkbook.

GALAT'S 10,000 RPM REALIZATION vs. COST TO BUILD SCALE

$0 - $5k = no spins @ 10,000 rpm (Guaranteed)

$5k - $10k = 1 spin @ 10,000 rpm (Not guaranteed)

$10k - $15K = 100 spins @ 10,000 rpm (Sorta guaranteed)

$15k - $20k = 5,000 spins @ 10,000 rpm  ( Confidence growing)

$unlimited =  all day long @ 10,000 rpm (Maybe, if the stars align, with the right builder and no Chinese sourced parts)

I'll go along with all of that except the "$10k - $15K = 100 spins @ 10,000 rpm (Sorta guaranteed)" part. I think Ed's assessment of how many you get for that figure is probably closer.

A JPM motor has to ring in pretty deep in Raby territory. The screamers are gonna' command huge money.

How many 10K spins do you get?

Not very many! A VW engine with a powerband this high would be too radical for the street, or even any kind of road race circuit. Such an engine's life is measured in (drag) racing sessions. Notice I didn't say seasons- sessions. And Stan's right- the screamers that last even that long eat 1,000 dollar bills at an unbelievable rate!

It was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment. I frankly should avoid posting on technical threads for the most part, I am not qualified.

The Mobil 1 FS 0W40 has my interest. 127,221 psi, bringing it in at number 4 on his list. Also, from the Mobil website, it's got 1100 ppm zinc. It's the high-temperature strength of the oil that really has me interested, as well as the thicker "hot" viscosity I still believe in.

I've been using that in my 2000 bug with a 1.8t almost since new. I've had zero issues with my engine - minor tune up, new timing belt and water pump. and a new mass airflow sensor is the only thing I've done with the engine. Just don't ask me about staying after the rattles. (that damn rear hatch!)

If operating temps oil pressure at 3,000-4,000 rpm (highway cruising speeds) stays below 45-48 psi (so it won't bypass the stock cooler) then then the Mobil 1 FS 0W40 looks like an excellent choice, Stan.

PS- Regarding 10,000 rpm aircooled engines- some of the drag race guys have been running that high for a while. The Berg race car (and probably others) were running those rpm's  in the mid to late 80's or even earlier, so it's nothing new. It all depended on how competitive you wanted to be. Al
