David, sounds like you should investigate a Cruise Control.     Honestly, I am really enjoying having cruise control on my highway cruising as it just makes it more relaxing to go for longer distances not to mention less stressful in keeping with the tolerated speeds on the highways.

We just finished our last leg of our road trip today with the drive from Sacramento to San Francisco (via Napa).

Right foot, knee and butt cheek are numb....I sure could have used that cruise control you guys were talking about especially in the prairies. I'm still amazed how good the roads were and all other drivers were very considerate in the dodgy weather. 

I think you found an excellent late window to make that trip. Cooler weahter is arriving with lows approaching freezng some nights coming up and that means frost in the morning even though we have a ton of trees that are barely showing color. And the northern root you chose can get very different weather than southern ON as you know.

This has been quite the adventure, especially for you, Dave, but for the rest of us, too.

So glad it has been mechanically uneventful so that you both could enjoy it more on your trek across Canada!

When you get home and rested you might post symptoms of your heater turning itself off.  From your earlier post it sounds like the glow plug gets everything hot and then turns off and, immediately, the entire heater shuts down.  Danny P and I have several different wiring diagrams for ESPAR or Eberspacher heaters and might be able to help you find what's going on.  They're not especially complicated, but can be a challenge.

"Mechanically uneventful" as Gordon put.  Jake Raby calls it "unscheduled maintenance"  either way you are fortunate and you must be getting a nice sense of dependability as you pile up the miles.  Congratulations on scoring what will assuradely be a very reliable car.  

What an adventure too.

David, I have the troubleshooting guide that came with my Espar and will scan that for you for when you get back home.  It shows symptoms and fixes  and on occasion I have had the same issue as you described---I just recycle it and experience no repeat of the shutting off the rest of the trip. 

Hang in there buddy---you're almost through with your epic trek.  Francine is definitely a candidate for sainthood!  Stay careful.

Ahh, I remember the birdman from the Alcatraz  tour we took. Did he escape to Canada in a speedster by chance....and change his first name??

David:  You have got me thinking about doing a trip to B.C. next summer to attend Henry's annual Treffen event.  There are a few stops I would like to make along the way to visit friends and family.

Trouble is, that would be a two way trip...

Made it home finally today with all running very well. Looks like 4,841 km total so about 3,000 miles. 

Thanks to all of you for your support and yes again thanks, I'll be contacting some of you who know about the Espar heater workings. That heater is all new to me. 

I'm not much for taking pictures and most photos are on the Bride's phone but here are a few. Nothing spectacular. 

How's the windshield holding up?  

Seriously, glad you had a good, safe, and trouble free trip.  I'm looking forward to getting another look at Ron's old car.  It always seemed to be a very solid IM.

Pyss off yerself, Carley.     the right side of the windshield deflected a rock off the back of a gravel truck somewhere near nowhere, Sask. about a week ago.  Small chip now cracking about 1/2 inch in both directions. It's what I do / It's me, eh ?  

With that kind of mileage done all in one shot on a trans-canada highway the windshield takes a beating for sure... The transports are throwing stuff in the air all the time.

You can't seem to be able to drive to the corner store without getting a crack in one. 

Of course, need I point out, that the roadster has a much larger windshield than your old speedsters, so much more surface area to crack...

Can you head to a Speedy Autoglass to get the crack sealed, etc. to prevent it from spreading?  Catch it while it's still small?

I'm going to give Speedy a shot asap. it hasn't got any worse since the hit.  Can't blame the cars for the broken glass as I do put plenty of miles on them and sometimes drive places where anything can happen. Again, a gravel truck got in ahead of me where I had no place to go considering other traffic. 

Had that happen to me in Portland.  The next morning a very big crack all the way across the passenger side.  What a pain it was for sure.
