There is excellent money in selling Insurance totals, theft recoveries etc. selling agents gets a precentage of the actual sale. etc.
How it works: there are designated holding yards one comes to mind is is "Copart" a national franchise, they are contracted by the Insurance Companies to haul in the vehicles from Body Shops etc.
The vehicle is then auctioned to salvage yards (again body shops) or other related wholesalers with a no reserve auction.
What quite a few people don't know is the vehicle owner has the right to purchase the vehicle back from their Insurance Company at 20% of the total pay off..i.e if they pay off at $20k you can deduct $4k from the actual amount (that amount is retained by the Insurance Company) you get the vehicle and a check for the $16k balance.
You do receive a Salvage Title from the Insurance Company, often what "totals" a vehicle is the labor portion of the repair costs and not the physical condition of the auto.
Also...
Check to see if the Salvage title EXCLUDES restoration for retitle or us on Public highways. Each state may have it's own rules.
Some Salvage titles may mean that the vehicle can be use for "Parts Only"
for example:
PA Vehicle code has restrictions listed for Reconstructed,Specially Constructed or Modified Vehicles in it's form MV-426B, concerning Salvalge titles.

Yes, but...If an insurance company pays out big bucks, the car is repaired and then a major
accident occurs soon after they lose. The repaired car has a lower (perceived) value
due the repair that was done(not with me but..). So if this car is damaged again the insurance industry doesn't want to get stuck paying full value for a car of lesser value.
Greg
You are correct in Pa. there are issues in the MV-426B. Like most everything, it's all in the know how of answering questions and jumping through the hoops even when applying for a Special Construction Title for a Speedster.
I wrote the post in a mode of thinking that reflected my former residence of New Jersey where just about anything is possible with a hand held forth. Uz follo'in me here uh?
Some states still do not declare any designations on their titles as to a vehicles past history.
