I have always wanted a Speedster after hanging out at a VW/Porsche repair shop in High School. I had a VW bug that I bought new with almost every cent I owned, I remember it was $ 1,889.00 out the door for a Zenith blue, black leatherette, no radio and no pop out windows. It was my first new car and not my first choice by the way. If I had my way I would have bought this bitchin 1957 Corvette that could be had for $700.00 used from a guy at school. But my Dad insisted I buy a new car and not someone else's problems. I had the money in the bank, so the VW was about all I could afford. My Honda 90 was not getting it done in the dating department. My automotive skills were limited to what I learned building an EMPI sportster in 1966 with my Dad and High School auto shop. Truth is I couldn't afford the cost of a tune-up at the Dealership, so I hung out at the Porsche shop and watched and listened. I would ask questions and picked up some tips on working on those cars. I got some confidence and began working on my VW, changing the oil, adjusting the valve and tuning the motor. I know if I got in trouble the Porsche shop was only a mile from my house and the guys would bail me out. Over time I worked at making my VW special. I added EMPI fenders, exhaust, Ansen wheels, wood wheel and dash, fog lights, side and rear air scoops, Koni shocks and a camber compensator. It was a hoot to drive but needed more power. I sold it before I built the motor. My interest moved to off- road racing, then into the whole Van happening thing, from there it went into Hot Rods and now I'm finally getting a Speedster built. I chose Greg at Vintage Motorcars to build my dream starting in March of 2021. I'm not getting any younger at 72 years and the wait and set backs are killing me. I don't want to be the one who never gets to drive his dream car because he kicked off before it was built. But now, I can see some light at the end of the tunnel and that's a good thing. My motor is done from John at Outfront Motors and I will hear it run this coming week. I had some personal changes done to the motor. I went with a 2.6 L stroker and added some color to the engine, reminiscent of the Gulf racing colors. I also have been working with Greg on a different dash treatment as I will be having Air Conditioning in my speedster and want a special look. And to add a bit of tongue in cheek to the badging, I'm having badges made that say "Schaubster" instead of Speedster. I think it will go well with my baseball glove interior, Slate Grey Outlaw styled GT , dual helmet faring, louvered deck lid, Rudge wheeled fun mobile.

Have a great week,  Dave Schaub
