Porsche 912 engine?

What are the pros and cons of installing a rebuilt 912 engine in a replica? Just curious - it would seem to be 'replica correct' for the car, but what about cost of repairs, performance, etc.

I would suggest you visit Jake Raby's site. He has a section on McReplica's and his "Jake's Thought's" section is very good.

Rather than paying Porsche prices to have a 912 engine rebuilt, have a Vw Type Four engine done and save some bucks (though a T1 engine combo may be less expensive in the short term).

There are two 912 engines; the first was basically a 356SC (refined Super 90 engine) and the last was the so-called 912E. The 912E is a fuel injected VW type 4 engine almost identical to the VW 411/412 and Porsche 914-4 engine; Jake Raby is the resident east coast type 4 guru.

The earlier 912 engine (356SC) is weak (rods, crankshaft) compared to modern built-up performance VW type 1 engines and doesn't make much power.

Put it this way: if I purchased a 912, unless it was really cherry, I would switch engines to a Vw Type Four. I figure it is more cost-effective to make hp per dollar with T4 or T1 engines.
