I hoped someone might have some info that would give me an idea of about when my old IM speedster was built. I know that Henry was little when the first 600 were finished and good records from that period don't exist.

Here are a few things I know:

- One front hood hinge has Intermeccanica on it

- Decklid hinges are original Porsche 356s.

- No torsion bar cover impressions

- No manufacturer tags or decals. Just a California VIN

I thought that all IMs had the torsion bar covers but when perusing the IM site I thought I saw a couple of early speedsters without. Are there differences between early old IMs and later ones?

Ae there other things I should look for?  Thanks,

Mike

Henry was 13 back then according to Paula's book - IM: Story of the Prancing Bull.  In pictures there, I don't see any indents in any IM's for the faux torsion bar covers. Original fist cars had new 914 VDO gauges (three gauges with larger tach). 200 were delivered by end of 1977 - molded off an imperfect previously wrecked Apeedster.  246 bodies came from that imperfect mold.

The next mold had a wider rear to accommodate IRS VW chassis. In total 608 were built.  Henry appears to be 15 years old then.

Shame someone pulled your build decal off.  Do you still have the Pracing Bull front hood handle?

I have #475 of the first run of 610? from when Intermeccanica was in the LA area- the body does not have the torsion bar covers and the engine lid hinges are aluminum with the company name cast on each. There's stuff piled on the front right now so I'll have to look later, but iIrc the frunk hinges are aluminum as well. Al

Yep, 914 gauges. Mine is built on a 1969 IRS chassis so it must be in the second mold batch.  The front hood handle had an old Porsche emblem (Porsche badges all around). Great info, thanks!

Ahah! Confirmation on torsion bar covers. Thanks, Al.

My Speedster ( sold late last year) was an older IM build, I think ser. no. 223 that was built in 1978. I gave that paperwork to the buyer but now realize I should have kept copies for this very reason. We had lot's of fun in it. Bought in Boise, Idaho in late 2010. A few big trips too...maybe 60,000 miles in eight years...haven't got the records in front of me. Here's one nice pic from Ft. de Soto park in Florida a while back and a pic of the sticker type data plate on the driver's door jamb.

This handle is chrome?

I wish I went this route because I put a 356 B on and took a lot of work.

Figure as you know but as you will see with my car I’m not going for the perfect replica look if you want to see seats that are very safe for the head rest I will post it some day and I have four point seatbelts. I’m concerned about safety and also comfort on highway driving some of you will laugh that it is not a replica I don’t care

For $139 or so I got the handle which is perfect and the emblem. It replaced the handle that I had which was polished aluminum with lots of tiny little pits from poor castings.
