My radio antenna's bugged me from the start, I know I'm being nit-picky, but it should be chrome.  By "should" I mean according to me (I don't know what period correct is but I'd assume chrome).  Everything else is.

Anyway, I want to switch this out for a chrome antenna, any suggestions?  I'm so shallow that I don't care how well it works or if it even works, I don't even need to connect it.  I don't actually care for radio because there are so many other sources.  The irony is that listening to radio is period correct!  So, it doesn't need to be a Hirschmann or anything like that.  Retro Sound has some like this one with oval base for ~$30, which isn't bad assuming its dimensions would work.

Part II of the question is I'd be curious to know if people have repurposed the antenna opening for anything else?  I was amazed with the responses when I asked about covering up dash holes...  Probably not a great spot for a hood ornament 😁

The prior owner put the antenna on the wrong side. It should have been mounted on the driver side of the vehicle. However, I do like the reproduction Hirschman Greg posted above. That being said if you actually want to use the antenna it will have to be grounded to a metal part since we're driving fiberglass cars.

Or cover it with a mirror.

@Napa Paul @Alan Merklin Or German flag?  Or SOC flag??

@Jim Gilbert - Madison, Mississippi Huh, interesting, had no idea.  Mine's gone in the winery cruiser direction, but that's a sweet setup.  I wish I had an excuse for those dash timers.

@Robert M Hah wrong side, didn't realize that, so many deviations on this car...  Thankfully the current antenna has a grounding wire routed, not that I care all that much, but of course I'd rather it be functional if I do get a real antenna.

@WOLFGANG Good point, but I already have a side view mirror there, it's just right behind my phone in the picture .  Do you mind linking that Hirschmann model?  I found this one on Stoddard for $125 😩, I'm guessing you know of a less expensive vendor.

For non-Hirschmann, there's this Retro Sound one for ~$30 and this CJ Pony Parts one for $17.  If they require cutting the antenna because they're not fully retractable, might as well get the cheapo CJ Pony Part (I know I know kludgy, but it's primarily ornamental for me).  But the Hirschman red tip would be a nice touch with my red paint, is period correct, and fully retractable, so it's calling my name.  Apparently I'm not that superficial.  Damn it!

Robert, thanks.  That's a pretty good eBay store, saved it to my personal vendor list.  I almost just click Buy It Now but then realized that I probably don't think have enough length under the fender (the Hirschmann requires almost 10").  Not only that, but there's a shoulder structure of the fiberglass that might be in the way.  I don't know, maybe the hole was drilled 1 cm in the wrong direction just by chance, or maybe it's supposed to be there and it's me who doesn't get it.

I can probably solve the shoulder issue by opening up the hole into the rear direction by a bit and/or shaving down that shoulder.  But that doesn't solve the length clearance issue...

Is anyone aware of "stub" style antennas like the form factor of the one I have?  Maybe Hirschmann made those too and I need to do some digging.  It's either that or back to the idea of CJ Pony Parts cheapo that I just snip, and put the red tip I already have on top of it.  The "cherry on top"
