Since I felt a little better today I went out and took a few photos to document this project start. The problem is the huge restriction for air flow from the grille to the engine compartment. This is also assuming that the engine compartment is totally sealed and all the air has to come thru the decklid grille like originally designed for an engine up to 90 hp or so.

I collected some of my junk decklids, cleaned the dust off, took some photos and measurements. You can already see what the problem is and how big (small?) the restriction is. No wonder my manometer gives me a vacuum reading in the engine compartment. You should notice that the lip that the grille attaches to also adds to this restriction. Please read the photo titles so you know what your looking at too.

I think I will conclude here feeling safe to say that the problem has been identified. Part 2 will be the process in measuring how much clearance I have to play with between the decklid rain guard and the engine components using the Bio Foam............Bruce

Hi Wolfgang...The two photos you sent will certainly eliminate any air flow restriction by far !   Just the louvers alone would probably do it. No I will not be changing the rear lock point either.

My goal is to supply a modification kit to a stock decklid that still has a rain guard that is functional and still looks similar to a stock one yet has no air intake restrictions like the stock one does....(within reason parameters of what most owners use as as engines)

I see in the double grille, it looks like I can see the fan shroud. It looks the same fore the single as well so I guess both owners just like the louver look. I do too. especially with a wide body and nice flares !       ...........Bruce

Bruce, I've been pondering on this as well. During a 1 hour drive in 80F air temperature, I can open the deck lid and not hold my hand on the shroud. But, do the same drive time with the deck lid propped open 5" I can hold the hand longer on the shroud. That tells me there are two things going on, air flow and heat dissipating upward. At this point, I've just been sketching ideas that I feel are way to aggressive to the lid design, so I have not done anything physical modification.

Read that and looked in the bathroom but didn’t find any Zicam.  Figured, “What the hell, I’ll try Jameson instead.”  Snorted it up in there to instantaneous shock - WOW!  That’s potent $#!+!

Now I can’t smell nuthin but I no longer care.....

Back to the Olympics......

Actually twice  :~(

Don Harrison......Yes I have two decklids. Both from a VS. One is only the lid with no rain shield attached underneath. The other does but it has been carved out in the center by someone who thought that was an expedient way to get more air in. You can sort of see that in the photos I posted at the beginning of this thread. Once I have finished this project I would be willing to sell them...certainly Don

Speaking of continuing this post. I got that damn flu twice. My Wife is on her second round right now so I hope I don't get it again. Other things have interfered as well. I ran out of wind wing and sun visor hinges so I'm getting that out of the way first. I have now sold over 150 sets of them world wide. I'm working on some new and really cool front license plate holders that will fit Original Speedsters and coupes...Types A, B, and C's.  No drilling will be necessary and they will be instantly (the plate) removable the same as the ones I make for our replicas. Next month I have a meeting with Sierra Madre Collections to show these wares and hopefully, possible inclusion in their inventory.

I'm also playing with a prototype set of Lexan side curtains/windows for better visibility. This not an easy job and it may be necessary to modify the top a little. I'm on my third prototype already and they are still just made out of plywood!

After reading everyone's comments about roll bars and seat belts I have been convinced that I need to re-do another roll bar and add shoulder straps. Many years ago I crashed in my dune buggy ( going maybe 50mph) into a wash and hit the wall of it on the other side. I was using a 5 point harness (3" lap belts) I lived, and after a a couple weeks in the hospital and a bunch of sewing,  hurt for a long time because I blew open the bag that encases my stomach and intestines. I really appreciated everyone's comments and opinions AND that there were no pissing matches. I really like that about this site and all of you in it...........Bruce
