If the wood is in good shape(no cracks, dings, chips etc) then sand with 400 paper and finish with 800 paper. If you want a real slick finish then after the 400, 800 use 1000 grit. Make sure the wood is clean and has no dust then coat with Man 'o' War varnish. It's very durable and looks great. Use the brush on rather than the spray for a stronger and more durable finish. I used to coat the bottom of my wood water ski with Man 'o' War back in the 70's and it held up admirably under those severe conditions
