What a nutty process! It is probably my own fault for not looking into it, but what a F-ing hassle. I sat in sec of states office for 45 minutes to find out I needed an inspection before I could get it registered. They said I needed to get an officer to come out to my house and inspect the car and certify it with this green sheet they gave me. How in the hell are you going to get an officer out to your house to inspect your toy?! I'm on the phone yesterday trying to get a cop to come out to my house, and they are like yeah when we get around to it. I then called the state police and they informed me I could drive straight to the police station as long as I had proof of insurance.

So stupid me drives to the station, and they said yeah no problem we'll inspect your car and they did. Now I'm thinking what if this officer is an ass and doesn't pass me. Too loud no bumpers etc. All of this was on this green sheet I had to bring. Then, I FINALLY PASS, and I have a half an hour to get to sec of state before they close and its the weekend.

I'm at the sec of state; the second one today. This one is in my home town, and where I get a shot of reality. In Michigan to register this car, I need a mich VIN # not the beck VIN. That means I have to fill out a bunch of paper work to get an inspector to come out to my house between sixty and ninety days out to inspect my car and place a mich VIN on my car before I can get a title!!! In the mean time I can get a sixty day temp plate so I can drive around. I was also informed due to budget constraints michigan is short on these type of people who do this VIN process, so sixty to ninety days might not be realistic. Is this shit crazy or what.

Now the positive. I got my temp plate; I'm street legal. The smile this car brought to my face today made it worth it. Man does it pull!! I'm going to post another post with my thoughts on my first couple drives today.

Tony:
When my Spyder was imported from Seattle Washington last year, it had to be inspected as well by the CHP. The officer had a ho-hum attitude "when we get to ya" style.

I contacted the local Automobile Club and made an appointment for the inspection and all registration in one visit the next day.

Don't know if it works the same in your state, but it might be worth the membership if will save you the hassle with the bureaucracy.

Tony--I'm so sorry you had so much trouble! It must be a state specific thing. In Tennessee, the desk person didn't blink, but registered Spydie as a 1955 so it was exempt from emissions testing and made it eligible for an antique tag, which I didn't do. But, sounds like it's ok now for you?? v v
Tony: Glad you're burning up the roads. Arizona is also a no-brainer. It took about 30 minutes. 20 of that was because the Calif. title had one too many zero's in it. The inspector just hand wrote a note on the title and I was off.
If you can get your car titled as a 55, etc. it's much better for insurance and registeration renewal (also no emmissions testing). Enjoy. Cheers!
