My GP Spyder was delivered with 5.5x15 wheels. They are too wide for the body and extend beyond the wheel arch by 1/2".Will 4.5x15 do the job or do I have to do some body work modificaton.

They do extend by 1/2" at the rear and do fit if you relieve the bodywork and use 155x 15 tyres...see pic's of my car on this site
that should help!

Hi Don,
Another alternative is to "push" the wheel centers. Although my car is not a GP (except for the body)I still had outrigger tires on the front -- even though I had 4.5" wheels on standard ball joint torsion beams.
To fix it, I had the steel wheel centers cut out of the wheel "hoop" and repositioned with 3/4" less offset.
Since I built a custom IRS rear suspension, I didn't have the problem in the rear -- I was able to build the rear chassis to fit the body.
Anyway, I have some pictures on this site (click on "Photos" above). Look for rs-60 mark, about 7 lines down. I have 4.5" rims on the front ("pushed") with 185/15 tires, and 5.5" rims on the back (stock Mangles offset) with 205/15 tires.

Don,
Actually those tires are 185/65-15 and 205/65-15, respectively.

Many thanks for your input gentlemen. I now have something to get the little grey cells to work on. The weather here is very cold and I have no heating in my garage. So my project has not been touched for some time. However, come some warmer days and I will be back on the job and will be back pestering you guys for more wrinkles!

All the above is good info, the decision is do you want to make a replica and stay on 'skinnys' or go the custom wide wheel route?
the choice is yours.
The pic of a 'real car' shows the wheels well in at the rear (see attached)
