Dear community,

I'm really happy to join your community from Europe / France  (nobody is perfect...).

I'm a passionate Porsche driver and after a 993 type (sold...snif), my dream is to find an Intermeccanica speedster pre-1988 (to get homologation card here in France after importation).

Goal would be ;

- Car in really good conditions with serious maintenance tracks

- Private owner (and passionate) - Minimum owners number (2 or 3 max?)

- Only cosmetic modifications - original engine 1600cc (or 1900 ?)

- No corrosion (or quite few for 30 years old car) - No crash

- Body from IM mold n°2 (among the 608 produced if i'm correct ?)

Then my questions are coming (may be a bit generic...)

1. Any recommendations of organisations or companies who could chase the car locally for me ? or local contact here in US ? What about calling IM to benefit of their customer portfolio / connexion ?

2. Any recommendations about preferable car period or type ? what are the "must have" or what is not mandatory ?

3. Is there some states to focus the search or no needs for such focus ? Any preferable web sites ?

4. Any comments or advices ??

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Enjoy your drives !

ps ; just for fun, my neighbourhood is the happy owner of a Vintage Spyder 550, former one's of Greg. Incredible no ??

You do see older IMs show up here on SOC.  Some say 608, others say 660 built.  A give away to it being a true IM are the stickers in the door frame and INTERMECHANNICA cast into the hood/trunk lid aluminum hinges.  I guess any engine size is possible but many seems to be 1600 or 1776 cc.  I'd also keep an eye on TheSamba and Hemmings.  Even Ebay would be source.  Many members here will glady give you their evaluation if it is close by to them.  Your choice of whether you want the speedster (w/side curtains) or the Cabriolet (roomier interior with windup windows).

This was owned by our Moderator/Web master (Theron) awhile back and is gorgeous with many upgrades - $45k

Beverly Hills Motors (Calif) has a lot of cars advertised (I don't think they keep their inventory up to date though so some may have long ago been sold)

Fly yellow is a questionable color (suspect not originl to IM) -https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/replica/speedster/2050545.html

A really nice one -https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/replica/speedster/2028066.html

Hello Wolfgang,

Thanks a lot for this detailed feedback and highlights. It gives interesting inputs for my search. Will have a look and raise questions.... (I just need time to manage thsi project and the daily things...).

Thanks again

There are a few knowledgeable SOCers near that Orlando FL car (I'm near 8 hrs away).  Seller is anti-shipping but someone local could assist.  Lots of international shipping ports in FL. Note the INTERMECANNICA cast in hinges.  I doesn't look like it needs much.

Not sure how the PORSCHE registration would impact you - FL does inspect the VW chassis #/VIN so you'd think they would see it as a VW (would need to check title).

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the search and link. Car looks to be in acceptable conditions (being miles away) and price for value seems interesting.

My only concern is that with IM body fixed on WV bug chassis , It cannot be released  now in France. The only option is to get full pack from IM previously homologised as such. Otherwise high probability to fail.

Anyway thanks again a,d keep in touch.

I agree with you, car looks interesting base with not so much to do. As mentioned to Jim, I don't expect such car with not homologised chassis using IM body to be approved here in France.would be too risky.

What do you mean by FL (French law? other?)

keep in touch

I checked the book Intermeccanica - The Story of the Pancing Bull and it confirms that 608 Speedsters (not 660) were built in 1976 -1979.  All of the early IMs were on a shortened VW T1 bug (or guess Ghia) pans. If an IM on a VW pan can not be registered in France - you'll have to look past the first 608 cars produced to a 1985 and up car.

In 1981, Frank Reisner moved the family and company to Vancouver BC. During 1982–1985, Intermeccanica International Inc. started production of the Roadster RS. In 1985 Intermeccanica developed a new tubular chassis for the Roadster RS to replace the original VW pan.(2)
