If it's a similar mechanism to the shifter I have, you'll have to hold the spring loaded reverse lockout ring up towards the handle so you can disengage it from the piano wire that goes up through the center of the shaft to the button. You'll have to pull the whole shifter off to do this. Once the ring is held upwards (jam some needle nose pliers in there) pull the piano wire hook down out towards the bottom. Once the wire is unhooked from the ring, you can pull the handle off while guiding the wire through the center of the shaft. That wire hook likes to get held up on everything, so you may have to force it.
