I am selling a Sidewinder Muffler custom built by A-1 Muffler of Santa Ana, California. It is ceramic coated, has flange fittings to heat exchangers, and comes with a detachable muffler (for quick and easy access to make valve adjustments) and a stainless steel tail pipe which can be rotated. Hardware is included, but not gaskets.

This muffler comes off of a Vintage Speedster made in Hawaiian Gardens, California in 2013. It was attached to a 2110 cc VW engine built by CB Performance of California. The engine produced 141 bhp and 157 lbs of torque with this muffler.

Original receipt indicates cost was $1,050.  I am selling for $495 plus $100 shipping.  Contact me for more details, questions or offers: 619.222.2663.  Please leave a message and I will return your call same day.1218

I bought the Vintage Speedster with this muffler from a collector in November 2019 when the vehicle had less than 618 miles on it. I removed the muffler with less than an additional 100 miles on it.

It has some scratches on the bottom as seen in photographs.

Note that the flanges to the heater boxes are at a slightly different angle than the flanges on standard heater boxes which are at a 9 o clock / 3 o clock angle. The flanges may need to be welded to an angle to fit.

I am not sure what you are asking.

If you are asking if this muffler can fit on J pipes, the answer is yes as long as the J pipes have flanges at similar angles as the muffler pipes.  I suppose you can also remove the existing flanges on the muffler and install J pipes (or heater boxes) with those standard VW compression rings.

If you are asking if this muffler needs (or requires)  J pipes, the answer is no.  This muffler came off heat exchangers.  So this muffler can be used on both heater boxes or J pipes.  I would note that the heater boxes which this muffler came off of are the Danske ceramic coated  1 -1/2" heater boxes.

If you are asking if this muffler comes with J pipes, the answer is no. I am only selling the complete muffler without J pipes (or heater boxes).  Mounting hardware is also included.  You will need your own gaskets.  It came with compressible graphite gaskets.  You can order some nice ones from CB Performance or get their copper gaskets which are also recommended.

Regarding your counter offer, I might include free shipping.  Where is the muffler to be shipped?

Key West?  That's about as far away as you can get from where I live in San Diego in the continental USA.  How about this?  I can meet you half way.  If you pay $545, I will include shipping which is more than $100 for USPS Priority Mail.  I think we can use Pay pal, although it has been a while since I have used it to receive payment for anything outside of Ebay.  Just let me know.

Oh Sorry.  That can be frustrating.  I could have saved the better part of a day packing the muffler for shipment across the country if you had bought it and picked it up at my house in Point Loma, but I talked to the buyer and I am happy that I think the muffler has found a good home with a real enthusiastic driver and collector who will appreciate the muffler.

That red Speedster was a work in progress.  When I saw it, the guy had to charge the battery and everything on the car needed some loving care.  We drove it up Mount Soledad and some fun, but I had to pass on it.  Too much work for me.

I bought my speedster last November and this weekend I finally got it to where I can drive it without anymore changes.  I had to move the stick shift back and the seats forward to be able to drive it.  I changed the appearance from Carrera to stock 1600 Super with chrome bumper guards, rear reflectors, clear headlight lenses, nipple hubcaps and twin pea shooter tail pipes.  1412

Thanks for the compliments.  The winner is Danny.  He wins an all expenses paid trip to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart Germany.  The Targa is a 1971 911E.  But Musbjim is pretty close.

BTW, the credit for the cars condition goes to the previous owner.  He did 99.9% of what you see.  He was very meticulous, professional and precise in his formation of this vehicle.  I traveled throughout California and three other states to find this one and I have been very pleased with this Speedster.  When done right, these cars can be as much a pleasure to drive, work on and own as the ones that came off the factory floor in Stuttgart.

You have an eye for detail Danny.  And once again you are correct.  The fenders and deco strips are a tell tale sign.  And those mirrors are not original.  I replaced the single driver side round mirror with Baby Vitaloni's from Italy.  I bought them in 1986 when they were popular for these cars and they were sold by Performance, and some other Porsche mail order houses.  Good eye!

And the color.  The color is a 1975 Porsche factory color called chocolate brown.  The original color on my 1971 911 was Sepia Brown which was lighter with a bit of mustard in it.  I did a full restoration in 1986 and kept it original for the most part but the car also reflects the popularity of what was in style back in the 1980's.
