I'm looking for door latches for my speedster I'm building. I don't care to make it original. I'm more interested it it functioning well and keeping cost low (i.e., avoiding original porsche parts and substituting with cheaper vw parts where it makes sense).

Is it better to make up my own custom door latch system? If so, what should I go with?

If it's better to stick with the original latches, where should I get them? I found these but don't know if they are the right ones and good quality: https://www.mgmagicclassicmoto...passenger-side-each/

Those MGMagic parts are CMC/FF so will fit most kits.  (Handles aren't Porsche parts) Yes, you need the exterior handle (hardly any have key locks), the lock striker mechanism (it's from some VW), VW interior door mechanism w/lever handle, VW bug striker plate, and some VW inside door rods to connect bits.

I would not try to use VW bug door handles as they are designed to be mounted on steel VW door - not fiberglass.  You could eliminate the door handles and go with hot rod door popper solenoids.
