I have had a 2003 Boxster for two years now and love it. I was a 356
speedster replica aficionado for a long time with much research done. Just
my opinion but the money you spend for a good replica 20-30 thousand, you
could have another real Porsche for that or less. Just saying

Bob,

You're 100% correct— a used Boxster is a smarter use of money. Smarter yet would be a new Mazda MX5. By this metric, a Kia Rio is positivity brilliant.

There’s not one thing about these cars that make any sense. If anything else will do, I’d recommend buying it.

FWIW, I’m spending zero time on the “P” car forums. I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got.

You might contact Starke. They can apparently convert your Boxster to a facsimile of a 356 Speedster, providing you with the best of both worlds.

You can pick up used originally $40-52k Boxsters for $8-12k or near nothing if it has IMS/RMS issues and needs a new $15k engine.  Or buy a new VS for $30k and 3 years later sell it for $25k.  Buy a used Speedster and resell it for what you paid for it or slightly less a few years later.

If you haven't researched corrected the IMS, or Intermediate Shaft bearing problem with the 1999-2004 Boxster you need to. If it goes and takes out your engine the price advantage is gone. It is the main reason I chose the '87 911 over the Boxster. The Porsche purests will tell you that the only true Porsche is the 911. I heard a lot of that when I owned my 912. The 356 owners I know by and large hate them. 

Let's get back to helping Curt find a good mechanic. 

Mr. Geiser, why don't you start a fresh thread to tout your decision to purchase a real Porsche Boxster versus the plastic fantastic parade cars we talk about herein, because if there is one thing we try to avoid it's thread drift?

I've owned both a 911S and a 912. In my case, neither was as much fun as my bogus Speedster. To each his own.

Owned a yellow 87 911 TARGA and LOVED it...great car AND I love my IM6....which is a 911 in a 356 Replica body(good choice for the 911 purist)...yes the 911 is pure Porsche.

I'm in Sacramento, and Anthony is the best air-cooled dude I know of in these parts. He's in Auburn - a bit of a drive from Stockton, and even farther from Modesto, but he's pretty well networked in Northern California, so he may be able to hook you up with help that's closer to you.

Take your time in deciding on a Speedster replica. Most of us here wouldn't drive anything else for fun, but as you'll discover, we also have some pretty nutball answers for most of life's other questions, too.

The BOXSTER is a fine car.....but yes...there are those who pointedly believe that if there is WATER, there isn't a Porsche.....

Modesto is a good clip from Anthony. He may know of a fellow out your way. Ping @Troy Sloan he may know someone. If Troy doesnt... Maybe Scott Sebastian can reccomend someone out your way.  All you are looking for is a good aircooled vw mechanic.

Yes, Bob, we are a tightknit  group of Speedster lovers, but that doesn't mean we don't love a bit of thread drift (or discussion of other things car or not car related). Because our cars don't carry P serial #'s some think we aren't qualified to discuss all things Porsche, but other that...   oh, look at that- my son has a brownie!

Shhhh... those are details we don't share with outsiders.  To them? We're all Steve McQueen / James Dean / Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood.  

I had a P 914 in the 80’s . Lot’s of fun, but every once in a while someone would say, Hey, that’s a good looking VW!”   :-( 

Heh... those sorts of folks are the kind of people who would be offended by that comment.  I don't know that sort of stuff quit bothering me when I was 18. Call it what you want.  I just enjoy driving anything.  VW, Speedster, Yugo... I don't care what people call my car. I'm just happy driving with my @$$ 10" off the ground with 2110cc's of hornets behind me. 

When I have to look up to see into a Prius... and my eyeballs are even with the lug nuts on an 18 wheeler -  it's all fun and games.

Why do they allow Priuses in the left lane? And why do they always just stay there?
