I'm working on one now. Still waiting for my engine to be finished. Hopefully, in the next week or so it'll be done. I have SB speedster with the tube frame. When measuring, it looks like it'll fit by a hair. I won't really know until I have it all together. Using the stock 915 tranny. If all else fails I have Type IV that'll go into it & I'll save the 911 engine for another project.
Jeff - it would be great to hear of any things to watch when fitting the engine and to see some pics of progress, etc... not to mention performance details when its up and running. Did you get the 911 engine from a wrecked car? Might I ask what it cost? Good luck with your project!
I'll start posting some pics. as I get to the engine install. Right now it's not too exciting to look at. I'm hesitant to do too much right now with out the engine. The engine was out of my rusted 911. So yeah, you could say it was pretty costly. The engine rebuild is going about 4K. I've seen some on ebay recently for around 2,500-3,500. But you'd have to figure($) a rebuild down the road. Although there's a Boxter engine on ebay right now. That'd make an interesting Speedster.
Geezzz we air cooled guys go to great lengths for our love for the soud of one. The import boyzzz are getting 500whp out of a rotery (wankle), and you can put one in your POCKET. Reliable 700 is not hard, there doin' it all day. 700whp in a speedie did I say GEEZZZ, no JESUS!!!!! (w = to the wheels, rubber, you know hp)
I was at the Daytona 24hr in 1988 with a "hot" pit pass. We were about 15 pits from the Mazda 4 rotor GTP car. The exhaust was so loud they put a muffler on in and it was so hot it almost set the car on fire if it sat for any length of time unless they raised the rear body section to get some ventilation going. But boy, did it sound sweet.
