Hi Everybody!

I just bought a speedster in St Louis (I live in Los Angeles). I need to get it transported, but it does not have a top. This means that most shipping companies will want it to ship enclosed, doubling the cost! I'm thinking instead of having an upholstery shop in St Louis install a top from Vintage Speedsters. Does anyone have a shop in town that they would recommend? Or any suggestions? I'm a noob, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Have a great weekend,

Patrick

Patrick,

It might be simpler to shop around for transport, as they are very competitive but won't tell you that !   For example, I used CFR/Rinkens International (guy by the name of Aaron Gibb) and they transported my car from Vintage Speedsters in the LA area to Sarasota, FL in an enclosed trailer for a very reasonable price.  These Transport companies are really brokers, in that they collect work and then farm it out to transport owner/operators, so most of these "companies" are really virtual in that they don't even own a truck !

Once you got your car out to California, you would have a larger group of possible convertible top companies to select from.

I'm pretty sure this is a sign of the Apocalypse, .... but I agree with Vince 100%.

The first speedster I bought was in 2000 on ebay from a guy in CA. I shipped it on an open transport to save $600. The car arrived almost a month later, in the dark of night, delivered by a guy driving a pick-up and pulling a 3 car trailer. He dropped it off the ramp unloading it. The car had been on the back of at least three different trailers and had sat unattended in shipping terminals in both Denver and Albuquerque. It sat outside during a blizzard somewhere in Texas.

Don't skimp on shipping.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Be sure to check out the Better Business Bureau for customer complaints - all Transport Companies are going to have complaints, but some are far worse than others.  Obviously Stan's problems were probably worse than most, and I hope that Stan filed a complaint so the rest of us can be sure to bypass that company !

Seriously though, don't let price be your ONLY filter, look at complaints, look at on-time record, look at damage reports, etc.  There can't be anything worse than having your hot rod delivered, but it is dinged or otherwise hurt !

It doesn't look like its ever had even a snap installed.  Does it even have top frame? Was going to suggest a full tonneau but you need snaps under windshield area.  Think someone here actually had a used tonneau for a CMC with roll bar.

How about having it shrink wrapped like a boat.  Doesn't look like it has an interior so what's damage should it get wet even totally uncovered?

Shame it isn't closer to Bremen IN where Cary Hines of Beck is located.  He could install top and ship to LA with one of his new cars.
