I wanted a better quality ignition for my car and bought the sixty dollar-ish Bosch ignition from Sierra Madre Collection. I didn’t realize it is supposed to be paired with an independent starter button. Instead of returning it I plan to pair it with a starter button. 

Two questions: 1) Which starter button is other people using? 2) Does anyone have a wiring diagram they can share or would you post the steps for adding the starter button?

Subject to your findings after what Laner said, wiring a starter button is dead simple.

On the back of your ignition switch there is a permanent + 12 v   tab among others. Identify it with a 12 v tester over to any ground. You don't want to use that one. Find another that becomes live when you turn the key on to   IGN   with the tester over to any ground nearby. Keep an eye on THAT tab.

Identify a wire coming up from the starter solenoid to some other tab on the back of the ignition switch. Disconnect that one at the switch. Install the starter button. It will have two tabs on the back. Run a wire from THAT other tab noted above over to either side of the starter button tabs and run the wire that came up from the starter solenoid to the second tab on the back of the starter button. Bob's yer Uncle....twice in this case.  Now three times !  Nice fob, Bob.

Robert - Do the instructions say a separate button is needed?  I ask because I also switched to a fancy Bosch and was surprised when it would turn past “on” to “start.”  I fiddled with it and found that you had to push it in to get to the start position.

When I went back to the web description it read that an independent starter button was needed. I’ll double check when I get home from training out of town. I’ll let you know. 

IMG_20170507_205757163I got a Bosch ignition switch from AutohausAZ.com for about $50. It does indeed have a push-in to turn-to-start feature. 

I bought a pushbutton from NAPA for about $6 in the early 2000s and it's still working just fine. I put a 30 amp Bosch relay on the switch, so it should last forever. Terminal 85 to switched ignition. Terminal 86 hooked up to a good under dash ground. Terminal 87 hooked to 12v hot all the time. 87A goes to the starter wire back to the engine. Easy.

New England Confectioners Company (makers of NECCO wafers) was sold last Summer after being in business for well over 100 years.   The new company (in the midwest, I think) will continue the wafers starting next year.  The old NECCO building (850,000 sq. Ft. ) has been cleaned out - It may become a high tech incubator - but the workers say that it still smells like candy in there.

But you'll never have the thrill of straightening your index finger and applying just the right amount of pressure to that button, and hearing that engine roaring into life.

And, just to be sure, it's your index finger...
