Anyone interested in a Pre-A 356 coupe mounted on a VW pan? It's an old custom done in the late 50's/early 60's. The body is rough but complete, all of the body panels are original to the shell and carry the last digits of the VIN. Rare Speedster original steering wheel, horn ring and button, wiper motor and assembly, original aluminum umbrella ebrake/steering wheel column mount assembly. All of the weird little "this and thats."

The body has tunneled '53 Buick tail lamps, split late 30's Buick rear window(s) sunken number plate, and those kind of 50's custom touches.

An odd combination of super rare Pre-A original bits and custom touches strangly all mounted on a shortened VW chassis at some point later in it's "life."

The VW pan is a 1968 with disc fronts, drum rears. Pro Street trans, and short axles. There is a stock engine in it now, but I have a fresh/never run 1835 with straight cut gears, FK8 cam, Pauter 4:1 ratio rockers, non-merged/individual pulse exhaust header, Melling high volume pump, chrome moly push rods, mag 44 heads, big valves, ported, high rev springs, titanium retainers, German 009, Pertronix Ignition Module, Flame Thrower coil, German Bosch wires, Santana degree pulley, brand new AJ Sims Kadrons, Scat linkage. All of the good stuff and a lot of other little details and such.

Looking for $10,000 OBO. It's an odd combination of original 356 and aftermarket with a TON of potential. The car is titled as a 1955 356 Porsche with all of the matching VIN tags and plates, and the partial VIN on everything from the body panels to the back of the dash board, from the small aluminum interior shims to the back of the passenger's side door jam reinforcing gusset. Totally correct. The title is in my name, the car is currently registered and insured and can be driven if you're brave enough to try driving an unfinished "project."

Anyone feeling brave? Thought that I'd offer it to you guys before placing it on Ebay or TheSamba. I took some pics this morning, can email them if you like, but unless you've had some experience, this is a close up and personal kind of purchase.

Thanks !

Mr. P: Without having seen your pictures, I would suggest you consider "shopping" your vehicle in, um, Porsche circles if you catch my drift; the "pedigree" with VIN could be more of a gold mine than you would imagine. A 356 shell, fairly intact with the ID and registration, may bring deliriously ridiculous money. The other stuff could be offered up here or on the Samba. (Be prepared for that quadruple scoop of your favorite ice cream...yes?) Good luck!

Yeah Scott,

It would be an easy sell to the Porsche Boys, but it would be broken apart and either restored or sold in pieces
due to the rarity of the car model (Continental) and year.

Since it's up and running on a sweet VW pan, I thought that I would offer to the folks here first.
Kind of think of it as an all metal 356 replica. Metal coupe body, 356 Porsche pedigree, VW drive train and engine.
It would make the most amazing Outlaw ever.

Here are some of the pics. I didn't clean off the car or pump up the "roller wheels/tires" so kinda squint, it'll make the car look cleaner, OK?

Not that I've lost interest, so much as I'm shifting my time to the SC and my Father's now on life support machinery so there are his cars to consider, and the Ghia just went down for the count and . . . well, too much to consider so I'm letting some of the heard go in favor of concentrating on just two. The Mustang to drive and the SC to convert to a Speedster.

Honestly if the ten seems high for the Pre-A, make a counter offer.
Mr. P: I look at this car in terms of potential. If you're entering the market, I assume you want to get a good price for it. Since it seems to have been assembled from various parts as it stands, it could (and probably should) be re-assembled as I suggest. We all see things a little differently; the fact you offer it here as an "outlaw" is great. Some other observer interested in restoring an original metal VIN-numbered Porsche body would see it differently. Pre-A's and metal Speedsters and D's command very big dollars. I personally was talking to a guy who spent over $40,000 dollars restoring a rust bucket 356 some years ago and that didn't include the drive train. I guess you either absolutely love the "marque" or have a lot of money; most likely both. By the way, the guy also said he loved bringing the old car back to life. At any rate, I am going to watch the EBAY link I sent you last night just out of curiosity. Good luck.
ADD-I posted and there were more posts, so I don't want to stumble over my own shoe-laces here. I do think your car is worth more than $10K, and now you state it's a Continental. I'd test the waters Mr. P. See this: http://www.356continental.com/
ADD 2- plug in any available S/N's here and see if you get any results: http://www.my356speedster.com/?contentid=3
Thanks for the input. I guess that the car may or may not be worth some additional coin, I just see it as a curiously cool ride, you know. The rear could easily be returned to stock with three metal splices and underneath the fiberglass holding the split rear window frame in place is the original unmolested window opening. I have all of the original Large Logo glass for the rear and side windows, so the stock look is easily attainable with just a little grinding and welding. No problem.

The car has most of the original gauges, although I have a better set of restored and 12 volt updated 356A gauges for it. It has the original small wheel as issued in the Speedsters and I have a sweet vintage Moto-Lita wheel as well along with a Sun-Moon-Stars and Golden Lady horn button. I have a pair of 356 SC bucket seats and two pairs of new Vintage Speedster buckets as well. I've also got a complete set of repro interior panels and all of the knobs, handles, switches and such in perfect condition to finish every thing off.

The cars sit low and sweet with the dropped spindles and the body positioned as it is. Luckily it's also centered in the wheel wells, unlike most Speedsters. I have a set of Enkei basket weave, chromed four lug, chromed wide five lug, and Marathon wheels and new tires to go with the car along with fiberglass bumpers and polished aluminum over-riders. I have EVERYTHING in perfect condition to complete the car, actually. I never did anything extraordinary to the body since the plan was to leave it RAT and have a perfect interior and PISSA running gear underneath it all.

On top of it all, it's a genuine 1955 Continental. The Registry confirms it. I even have the Continental script for the fenders and the original aluminum 1300 rear script which is currently absolutely impossible to find. Makes the car a rare one in any condition, a complete tub with all of the numbered sheetmetal, all the more so.

Again, just offering it here first, just in case anyone wants a fun project with a "piss-'em-off" rating of an absolute A-Plus.

Other wise it's off to TheSamba, then Ebay.

Generate a descriptive e-mail to some of the sites I sent and inquire what price you think he (e-mail contact or moderator) would place on the car+parts total. If it goes to EBAY you might want to set a minimum price (reserve?). Hey, if I had 10 grand to spare, I'd buy. Sorry, I don't. (Also, sorry about the family health issues; my folks are 89 and 88 and I too have "re-arranged" my life-style to accomodate them. It's the right thing to do for people who have sacrificed for you). You're NOT the "P" you make yourself out to be.
Well, a new turn of events . . . there are a couple of folks coming from NH and NY to check out the monster. If they decide that it's too much for them to deal with, I'm parting it out. A TON of folks are after Pre-A trim, parts and sheetmetal, which will leave me with a stripped shell on a really nice pan.

If this ends up being the result, I want to convert the remainder into an open car, a steel and fiberglass Pre-A Speedster essentially. Not quite a replica since it'll still carry the numbers and enough of the tub to qualify as a genuine Porsche, but really . . . a replica none the less.

I'm wondering about used or splashed fiberglass Speedster body panels. Are they difficult to find in sections? Are they available from anyone other than the traditional manufacturers? Are they even available from the manufacturers? Does anyone know any approximate prices? Just rough ball park would do.

I ask this because I don't want to cut the metal nose off of the car and sell it for less than a replacement fiberglass nose would cost, you know?

I WILL need a partial rear clip including deck lid, from the lower rear to the interior edge. I'll keep the metal wheel arches and door jams since they're particular to the Pre-A, low and long. I'll need doors, and a hood and a complete windshield. A top frame and new canvas. Side windows and another bucket of this and that.

Just wondering about the availability of the fiberglass sections.

Right now, I'm dependent on the two interested buyers to come look and decide, after that . . . I'll be chumming for fiberglass. If anyone has any idea of what the panels are going to run, PLEASE lemme know, OK?

Thanks ! !

FP
Maybe . . . but they never seem to sell anything to you, just advertise a whole lot. Three times I tried to buy something from them and three time I got the run around. One time it was a luggage rack that they managed to sell to three different people. I was the first, but they said that they mistakenly already handed it over to the second in line and I might try making HIM an offer.

Now that I think of it all again, honestly . . . I'd rather rub shit in my hair than buy anything from Rusty Tubs.
